As the topic states I have never had a Tele. However I am thinking of purchasing a new MIM or used one. I would like to spend no more than $550. I mostly play rock / blues type music. Does anyone have any suggestions or info on what not to get? (things to look out for ect.) I have checked a few classified sites for my area and the only ones I have found have been upgraded. I would rather stick to a stock one and upgrade to my liking later on so I will probably lean towards a new one. Are the Squire versions any good or do you get what you pay for?

Tip: forget the squier...

I was you about two years ago.
I bought a Standart American Tele.
Oh my God!!! My life had changed...

I regret all the crap I had before. I bought it on ebay for 475€ used. A Beautiful 3 tone sunburst w/ rosewood neck specimen year 2003.

Go for a Standard American Tele. In that price range it's the best you can get!

I have a couple of MIM telecasters and I've owned Squires. The American Standards are built way better. Find one used, you won't look back.

I have owned non American Strats but never a non American Tele. Any non American Tele I ever tried was "less-than".

You can get a brand new MIM (a standard), in that price range, go into a shop and try one and see what you think. I've got a MIM and wouldn't swap it for anything, the quality is superb.

Save up just a bit more and you could get a Highway One (which is MIA), or a Baja (MIM).

Go with a Baja, they are fine guitars. Or if you can find one... a Japanese '54 Esquire, less versital but the late 80's ones are just fantastic playing and have great tone and of course are well built!

Here is a pic of my '54 Reissue Esquire...

Thanks for the info everyone. I am wanting to stay in my price range, but would love a MIA. I own a MIA 62RI Strat and the quality is superb, so I may just have to look harder for a used American Tele

I had also been looking for a good used Telecaster in the $425 range. I did my homework, spent hours reading reviews, watching videos etc on youtube, and visiting guitar stores including Guitar Center and spending hours playing new and used American and MIM Teles. I was looking for something I would not have to modify in order to play hard rock, blues and metal. I was also looking for quality as far as fret finish, neck comfort and finish, and great sound (without too much noise). I finally recoginized that what I was looking for was the new Fender Blacktop Telecaster (MIM)...beautiful guitar. Yes, American Standards are amazing, nothing at all against them...if you have the money and have the funds to modify to your own taste then go for it! But I thought the Blacktop was what I was going to walk off with until I saw what I thought was a used Fender Tele on the wall from a distance. Then the headstock shape and Schecter name stood out as I got closer. I tried out a 2005 Schecter PT in Vintage Red with a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, Grover Tuners, Duncan Designed HB-102s and steel bridge plate to match the steel covered humbuckers. :? I was skeptical, but the neck was amazing, highly polished, smooth and not sticky at all! I tried this beast of a guitar made of Alder weighing in at 8.5 lbs and could not put it down. I played the Blacktop and the PT over and over again with the same amp, same settings and the PT was the clear choice. As far as richness, warmth and tone depth and a lot less (almost no noise at all at high gain settings) than the Blacktop's stock pickups. Needless to say, I bought it and feel that its the best Tele w/humbuckers I ever played. Even though the PT has a push-pull knob for coil splitting, the sigle coil sound is adequate but very poor compared to sigle coil teles or strats. I'll keep my Fener Standard Stratocaster w/ SCNs for single coils and blues but always play my PT for hard rock and metal. By the way, I bought the PT in mint condition for $279. :D By the way, I picked up newer black PT w/ maple neck and fretboard and hated the feel of the neck (kinda rough, untinted and thinner) and did not like it enough to even try it out. IF you're lucky enough to find a Vintage Red One or the Black 2005 PT I'd buy it right away if in the $350 or even $375 range. I loved my PT so much that I'd even pay $600 for it used. But my next Tele will be an American Standard w/ single coils. Classic! :P

For that price range you could prolly get yourself into a G&L Asat Tribute. It won't be American but I had one with P90 style pups that was really very good.

u know, guys, I was always into cheap and weird guitars and fuzz amps. loved epiphones way more than gibsons. but about a moth ago i bought an american standard tele and it freaking changed everything in my sound, playing style, perception of music. and i really believe changed for good. so get the real thing. i'am playing for more than 15 years already and only now have discovered what i really needed - it was a good tele.

Amen Brother!!

MIM Teles are fine guitars if you change the pickups and the electronics, and dress the ends of the frets.
