Hi guys

Does anyone have an answer for me....

Got my tele a few weeks ago and I love it but I found that even the with the selector switch set to the neck pickup only, it has a lot of bass, I have to basically turn the bass on the amp way down to get a nice treble sound!

Now I dont know if I am just use to my "metal" guitars all fitted with EMG's and that these pickups on the Tele are just way more boomy. I also found that the Tone knob only "cuts" the tone when I dial it down to "2" (between 10 and 3 has no effect) only when it reaches "2" does it start cutting the tone drastically!

I am not sure if there is something wrong with my Tone wiring or is that just the way it is.

Can someone give me a few pointers!

Thanx guys

With a #2 Phillips screwdriver turn the pickup mounting screw on the low E end of the neck pup counter-clockwise about one full turn. Then turn the high E end mounting screw clockwise about one full turn. That is the easiest place to start. If that does not help then return the pup screws to their original position and look elswhere to solve your problem. Let us know what happens.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

As for your tone control problem... I had exactly the same issue with my Jaguar Blacktop, which (I assume) has the same humbucker pickups. I changed the 500k tone control pot for a 250k audio taper one, and the problem was resolved - nice smooth, gradual tone change over the full range of movement.

I also thought about changing the .047uF capacitor for a .022, but in the end I didn't - the pot change was enough for me.

Try it anyway, see what you think.

Thanx guys

SO...... I lowered the bridge pickup quite a lot and still had the same problem, I then decided to bypass everything (Vol. and tone pots) so I only had the bridge pickup in the signal path and again a very boomy sound! Its that sound that you get when you're on the hi-gain channel and when you accidently flip your switch to the NECK pickup, and you get that overkill of "lows".

I guess its just the way the pickup sounds, and I am so use to EMG's that I just don't like the tone I am getting. Basically if I have the bass on my amp at "5" (halfway, clean or overdrive channel) and use my Gibson (with EMG 81) I get a nice standard midrange sound, when I plug in the Tele I have to roll down the bass to about "1" to get a similar low end responce that I got from the Gibson, otherwise it sounds like I have the selector switch on the bridge pickup :)

Guess I will have to swop out the pickups for a set of EMG's unless someone has another option for me to try :D

And thanx stiggie_9 I will definately try a Audio taper pot replacing the tone pot!

Before I started replacing anything I would try, like previously suggested lowering the base side of the pickups (both) and using the bridge pickup with the tone knob turned up almost to the max. My Blacktop Tele has great base response when using the neck pickup and really accentuates the treble when using the bridge PU. Anyway it's worth a try.

Along with others listed above I have also replaced, changed and upgraded both tone pots and capacitors and gotten great results. I also have this being done with a Pawn Shop Mustang Special right now. Always make a big difference on my guitars.

I had the same problem until I put a small 6 band EQ on the board. Adjust the EQ until you get the sound you want. This solved my problem. :P
