The Tuners look the same as on Classic Vibes,Bajas and my high end Japanese Tele,I have own/owned all three so am not deluded. They work fine and are light and hold tune very well./The whole guitar looks good .A cracked pickguard ? .Well there had to be something for the" buy US only| brigade to moan about .Thats probably why the crack is there :D

And the cracked pickguard doesn't bother me. I am pretty sure that somewhere down the road I will replace the plain black with something just a little more interesting. It certainly doesn't affect the sound of the guitar and is not something I would ever return a guitar for. :)

It's just a surround like the ones used on most Gibson or Epiphone guitars, only it's bright and shiny nickel plate instead of plastic. All the trim on the guitar is either black or nickel plate, so the humbucker surround goes nicely with the bridge and the control plate. It's just holding the pickup, so in and of itself, I doubt it affects the tone of the guitar.

hmm, i was just curious cause you'd think that the sound will vibrate through it, and effect the tone in a different way to the plastic ones.

i actually might get a nickel shiny one myself.

I have a MP LPB Marauder. The quality is impeccable. It plays great and the pickups are awesome. Mine, however, doesn't have "FENDER" stamped in the saddles. It also does not say "Marauder" anywhere on the guitar. I had my doubts about the MP series when they first were announced, but playing several of them has changed my mind. Enjoy your new guitar.

First off, just to get it out of the way, the only thing I'm a little unhappy about with the guitar is the color - it's way darker than it was in the online pictures (yes, I was warned). There the grain was very visible and the color was a lot more brown. From six feet away, this guitar looks very dark and the transparent grain (solid pine in this case) is barely visible. In fact, the grain is more visible in the pictures I took than just looking at it now, but the pictures also look almost black & white. No flash was used.

I like the color myself.

thanks for the review. i just started a thread about the MP thinline tele, and youve answered a lot of my questions. i have to say im a bit gutted about the colour, i really like the brown-ness of it in the catalogue photos, and the mahogany of the thinline tele looks great through the stain. i could get the sunburst one, but im not a huge admirer of the white pickguard - thats a LOT of white plastic assaulting your eyes. the black is much more understated.

Hi CR, just stumbled across this thread and was wondering how the guitar is holding up? Would you be able to give us a short update on it? Do you still play it? Any niggles?

Thanks! :)

I have one of these MP Teles and I replaced the mid and bridge pickups with Seymour Duncans and replaced the coil split toggle with a series/split/parallel toggle. I love this guitar and the very wide ranging tone selection.

The bridge humbucker is a very high output Invader and the mid pickup is a high output RW/RP single coil Quarter Pound Strat. The neck is the stock MP Tele pickup.

I just tested this guitar's pickups' magnetic polarity using a Shatten Design Magnetic Polarity Tester and found I have the wrong mag polarity between the neck Tele and mid Strat pickup.

The factory pickups were: SN...N...S (bridge humbucker...mid...neck)

The factory Modern Player Tele neck pickup has South up polarity and the factory mid Strat pickup is North which is correct for hum canceling. I found out too late that Seymour Duncan pickups have the opposite polarity as modern Fender pickups so the new Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound RW/RP mid pickup is South up--the same as the neck pickup so I'm not getting hum canceling when playing neck + mid pickups.

With the new pickups: NS...S...S
Yes, the Seymour Duncan Invader humbucker has the active when split North coil closest to the bridge which is backwards to normal. My plan is to go ahead and replace the neck pickup with either a humbucker or a North up single. The moral of the story is to verify the magnetic polarity your pickups before you start to solder.

With this mod your axe is capable to handle a lot of music styles from big fat jazz to bright cutting funk.

I suppose the series/split/parallel toggle affects all the pickups.

The switch only affects the bridge humbucker. The mid and neck pickups are single coils so they can't be split.

When the bridge + mid are selected the s/s/p switch does allow the selection of both humbucker coils in serial or parallel mode, or a single humbucker coil paired with the mid pickup in hum canceling configuration.

I went with a very high output bridge humbucker (Seymour Duncan Invader) so when split it has enough signal to sound good and clean. The weak output and poor tone of the original humbucker in split mode is the most common complaint about the MP Telecaster Plus.

I have the parts to add the "neck on" mod (tone push-pull up) so I can select the neck + bridge in any of its 3 modes (in split mode the pickups will be electrically & magnetically out of phase though). The "neck on" mod will also allow neck + mid + bridge in any of its 3 modes so the tone selection with this guitar starts to get ridiculous.

After the "neck on" mod the tone selections will be:

Neck On switch in off position (normal mode)
1. Bridge in serial/split/parallel mode [3 tones]
2. Bridge in serial/split/parallel mode + Mid (with hum canceling in split mode) [3 tones]
3. Mid
4. Mid + Neck with hum canceling
5. Neck

Neck On switch in on position (neck pickup always on)
1. Neck + Bridge in serial/split/parallel mode [3 tones]
2. Neck + Bridge in serial/split/parallel mode + Mid (with hum canceling in split mode) [3 tones]
3. Neck + Mid with hum canceling [same as above]
4. Neck + Mid with hum canceling [same as above]
5. Neck [same as above]

For 15 different tones.

An S1 switch gives you more tonal flexibility.

What option would it add? I've heard some people have had problems with S1 switches.

The S1 switch can be used to put the special tone capacitor in series within positions 2 & 4 of the 5-way selector.

In that case the neck and bridge pickups are wired in parallel when the tone cap is active.

Here's a schematic for an SSS Strat (also applicable on a Nashville configuration I guess):

Position 1. Bridge Pickup in Series with Middle Pickup
Position 2. Bridge Pickup in Parallel with Special Capacitor and in Series with Middle Pickup
Position 3. Bridge/Middle/Neck Pickups with Neck and Bridge Pickups in Parallel and in Series with Middle pickup
Position 4. Neck Pickup in Parallel with Special Capacitor and in Series with Middle Pickup
Position 5. Neck Pickup in Series with Middle Pickup

Of course you're right, many guitarists consider the S1 system as a useless gimmick..

If the two SD singles are stacked humbuckers and came with a 4-conductor cable then coil tap/split options are possible.
