Hi,
I've just noticed that some tele's have 3 screws along the bass string side of the pick guard edge and some have 2. Why is this?
Its come to my notice as I've just bought a custom tele deluxe 2011 and the guard edge bows away from the body of the guitar by about 3 mm as if the two screws at its corners a slightly too close together causing it to lift. The result is that the neck pickup is also slightly raised. I suspect its a poor finish and I'll get it sorted (on what is otherwise a superb instrument--shame).

thanks for any comment

The early Teles, up until mid 1959, all had 5 screw guards, but there was sometimes a problem with warping, especially on the single layer guards. From then on, 8 screws were used, which helped to reduce the warping, although not totally.
Some of the modern reissue guitars have also got 5 screw guards, which again may be more susceptable to bending, but it's mostly luck of the draw, as the plastic guards will go where they want to go, whether they are on a cheap guitar, or a Custom Shop model.

Best bet is to get another (Fender) guard and put that on, and hope that it will stay flat.
I agree with you that it is annoying, but it isn't unusual.
