Attention: for anyone of a nervous disposition - look away now!

Seriously, not that bad perhaps on the scale of things in life, but I really had a bummer of a night yesterday with failing tubes in my DRRI (see other post) and then my 2006 60th Anniversary Telecaster took a knock to the fretboard - don't ask how, I'd rather not relive that episode in my life again (it all seemed to happen in slo-mo).

The damage is revealed below, but in reality, it looks worse under a macro lens than in reality, but it is what it is and I'm now looking to identify the best course of action for repair.

It could been a lot worse as the damage is on top of the neck out of general digit interaction and if impact had occurred a couple of mm up the neck, then it would have damaged the fret which incidentally all remain unaffected (phew).

This guitar, although much treasured, is a player and not bedroom queen so ideally looking to close up the open grain to smooth out the ding, but before I take it to my trusted repairer, I wanted to triangulate with forum members for your views please if you have experience of this annoying type of issue?

Realistically, you only have two choices:

1. Cut out the damaged area and graft a chunk of similar grained/quality rosewood in; glue, let dry and then shape as appropriate.

2. Pulverize an adequate amount of rosewood into powder; mix it with cyanoacrylate gel and then apply it to the damaged area thus building it back up and out; let dry and shape as appropriate.

You could even combine the above two options.

Play very carefully. It's character added to it.

Martian,

My repairer now has the Telecaster and instantly suggested the cyanoacrylate gel route is the only way to go with such a small ding.

He has a busy schedule so I expect it back next week - thanks for your input here.

:)

I may post some pics of the re-finished fret if interested?

Yes, it is a minor repair, nothing monumental at all.

You're quite welcome.

Sure, let's see some pix when you get it back.

Looks like a good repair, you can't tell which is the bit that was damaged.
