What is the difference between the American Telecaster and the Mexican Telecaster? Are the body and neck made of the same materials? Are the pickups the same?

Dude, the only real differences are where the instruments are made. All parts come from the Corona plant. See this link:

http://www.nymphusa.com/tele/FactoryTourE.asp

So don't worry...if you get a NAFTAguitar from Mexico, you'll save money and will be just as happy. However the american made ones tend to use more "expensive" parts.

I have a MIM (made in Mexico ) Baja Telecaster, that really is a great instrument. I have six distinct tones with the S-1 switch, so it is a tone monster. My pickups are custom shop inspired, called custom '69 pickups. I see on this forum there are people who'll buy a MIA '52 Tele who change the wiring. Basically, it comes down to trying and listening to a lot of guitars...you'll know when you hear it. 8)

... doesn't the s-1 switch only affect the middle position? switching the pickups between series and parallel configurations? Cause then its 4 tones not 6...sri to nitpick

No, it's 6. First of all there is a 4 way switch, and 2 of the positions combine the bridge and neck pickups in serial or parallel. The S-1 switch affects these positions by changing to in or out of phase. The other two positions are for the bridge or neck pickups alone, not affected by the S-1 switch.

It is AWESOME tone!

American guitars are made in the USA by Mexicans. MIM's are made in Mexico by Mexicans

The above posted link talks about MIM bodies...

Quote:
I also noted a pile of uncut bodies that were assembled of up to seven pieces of poplar (although some was alder) and veneered top and bottom. This was a stack of material that would eventually become bodies for their MIM Standards.

The specs show the MIM Tele's have Alder bodies, so I'm curious what exactly the differences are.

I have a 2008 American Standard Strat that I love, but I wanted a Tele. So, with the guitar budget blown on the Strat, I opted for a 2006 MIM Tele off ebay (I know, I know, big mistake) and I really don't like it. The edges of the frets might as well be cheese graters and it just won't stay in tune. World of difference from the American Strat....So I gotta decide wether to mod the MIM Tele or cut my losses and look for something thats a little higher quality....

yea i didn't realize that the baja had a 4-way switch. That looks sweet. anyways you can mod that using a seperate switch? I'm making a partscaster with tele scns and based it off the AM DLX so it has a four way switch on it. I'd like to see if i can make a seperate switch act as the s-1 switch. Anyone know if its possible? Anyone know where i could find the shematics if it is?

Hi:

I have a MIM Tele from 1994, I bought it new, I put texas specials in it in 1998, I had it set up when I bought it new, It plays and sounds fantastic. I'm happy I bought it and it has treated me well, although the neck is VERY worn now

Ole' I'm not sure about the sensitivity of the remark, although I'm guessing it may be quite accurate. Providing the assembly team is happy with their employment, it would seem the MIM version with all the custom shop pimpin' this guitar might be as good or better than anything made by possibly disgruntled workers who may be struggling to survive in SC. Happiness=Pride=Quality Adios' Da'me' el Tele de la Baja

I've always thought the Standard Tele or Strat (MIM) used lesser quality electronics and the wood was different. That said, the MIM guitars from 10 years ago or so were inferior. These days, with all the different models made in Mexico, you can find a real nice MIM guitar. I own two that I regularly gig with. I'd play whatever feels and sounds good to you.
