Telecasters are amazingly versatile so for a modern rock sound you could use....well basically any of them. But a good place to start is the 72 deluxe or the thinline with humbuckers (forgot the year). I know quite a few modern rock bands that use them. however i've also seen a lot of bajas, 60's teles, 62RI, etc. Pairing them up with an overdriven tube amp like a vox ac30 etc works for that tone. again most telecasters will work for modern rock unless you're looking for screaming distortion..in which case look at the J5 and jim root models. hope this helps.
