Hey hey.

So I'm brand new to this forum, being from South Africa and having very limited access to vintage gear, as well as custom shop gear I need some advice.

Today I stumbled upon a guitar that on first impressions seemed to be an absolute gem. A '78 Custom Tele (Serial number starting S8...). As I'm sure your gearheads will know this guy has the split "wide" humbucker at the neck and a single-coil at the rear. Great, great sound through the humbucker which seemed to accommodate multiple styles. (I play blues, funk, rock and jazz). The bridge pickup seemed a bit bright, twangy and 'honkey tonk' for my style, but being primarily a strat and hollow body player this might just need some getting used to. In terms of condition I'd rate it a 9/10, very little wear and tear, original pickups and hardware, a real find.

But now I'm just getting excited and rambling. The main issue is that my research brings out that the 70's teles weren't that great, hence the great value on the 50's/60's vintages. But my research also tells that there were 'gems' from the era, especially in the custom and deluxe teles. Now my predicament is that in South Africa, finding any other vintage teles to make a comparison with is almost impossible. The guitar felt, and sounded incredible to me, and I'm tempted to follow my gut. But then I realised that for the same money (15000 rand/2000 dollars) I could get a reissue, of the similar ('72 reissue) or another tele (possibly a deluxe solving the twang of the single-coil). It would be more expensive here in S.A. considering import etc. So I would be paying more for a reissue, but is it worth it?

Basically my question is that taking into account that this guitar is in great condition and a steal at $2000 dollars for vintage gear, is it worth going vintage or should I consider a reissue?

Thanks
Andrew

You're from South Africa? Have you seen Riddare Av Koden play?

Hey man, yeah South Africa it is. Not much of a metalhead so I haven't personally seen them, but all my metalhead mates go nuts over them.

Anyways back to the topic at hand!

I love them. Tell the metalheads to say hi for me.
