Hey everyone, I'm building a guitar kit "for the fun of it" and I am not sure what paint to use on the body. I found some assome custom laquer , but the guy is in England. The off the shelf paints look like h-ll if the colored top is indication of the color. I was thinking maybe car paint would work. Any imput would be appreciated. Bill :?

Automotive paint will be your best bet.

What I think you should do is decide on the color and go to NAPA (auto parts store) they have books with color examples you can look at to help you decide and tell them you want your color in a spray can. Any color you can possibly think of they'll mix it for ya. They used to do this for the spray cans, I'm not to sure if they still do or not, wouldn't hurt to check though. What they'll do is mix your color in an auto paint like URE-GLO, Lacquer or whatever type you want. The URE-GLO is about the cheapest, it's a gloss and doesn't need to have a clear coat sprayed over it. This is the same paint that I used a few years ago to paint my Lincoln, the paint is almost like an industrial paint, but it's high gloss and very tough. I think I remember everything costing about 200 bucks, 1 gallon, some hardener etc. But the spray cans will be already mixed and ready to spray.

They usually have some colors already on the shelf. The last time I checked those cans were about 20 bucks and there about the same size as a regular spray can, which will be more than enough to paint a guitar.

Hello Bill2009,

Another forum member Miami Mike suggested

I visited the website-alot of neat stuff, worth the time
to check it out. When I find a used strat body I'm gonna
get some paint from these guys.

By the way thanks Miami Mike.

Best of luck.

Car paint is fine, most of the original fender colors came from car paint cuz that's what they used. Also you gotta consider that there's a reason the Fender Care Kit is made by Meguiars!

Both my pink Mustang (before I owned it) and my General Lee Tele build were painted by auto body shops....

The Mustang appears to have a single stage (no clear coat) job which is ok, a few imperfections, but still really nice. The General is a two stage (base+clear) and is absolutely perfect. The did exactly what I wanted.

If you have a local body shop that does custom bike/hotrod work, that would be your best bet, since they are used to doing unusual custom stuff. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

This might help you pick a vintage color. About 3/4 way down the page you can find paint charts.
Fender Custom Colors: Color Confusion.
Lots of info on Fender custom colors from the 1950's and 1960's.
