I recently bought a Fender American Vintage Telecaster 62 and I was very happy with it until I had a gig and exposed the guitar for 4 straight hours during the rehearsal to direct sunlight.
Two days after I began to notice the guitar was kinda strange. It felt like it had lost its "soul". The guitar had a full-bodied sound, really balanced, in the beginning and now it seems like a stick with strings with no sustain.
I've took her to my luthier and he said he couldn't find any damage. Still I feel the guitar isn't the same!
Could the extreme heat (the guitar was almost literally burning my arm) have caused permanent damage to the guitar's structure?

It's not like it's the CPU in a computer. I'm sure the people who played Woodstock were ok. Hell, I found a guy near my home town who was a technician there and he had a garage full of equipment from there and that era. He had a British flag Strat.

Just a thought, but do your strings need changing? How's the intonation? If the intonation is okay, your neck is probably fine. You didn't make any deals with the devil, did you?

You would have suffered permanent damage before the guitar did. Listen to your luthier. Put some new strings on it and go play.

Strings last about 2 hours of playing......For me anyways.....So if you aint changing them every 2-4 hours that's your problem without a doubt...

Sure the strings have its influence (changing them was the first thing I did of course) but it was another kind of difference that I noticed, more like in the playability. Suddenly the action was a little bit raised and the sound kinda lost its thickness. But I guess you're right and the most affected was really me and my head with all that sun going directly to my brains! :)
I've been playing my tele more often now and she seems to be getting on track again... or me...
Thanks for your comments anyways.

the change you noticed is a humidty and truss rod deal ....you should learn how truss rod adjustment works so you can keep your guitar playing the way you like throughout the seasons .......

What did you luthier do ? for saying nothing wrong ?

You said action is a little bit raised , did he readjust the truss rod Did he check it ?. This could move with the heat of the sun , the neck wood could have dried too but IMO it is not a problem.

yes, he said he checked the truss rod and levelled a couple of frets that were causing some buzzing. I feel that, as you said, maybe the wood dried with the high temperatures and somehow it's affecting the tone and the sustain.

Vintage guitare have often a good tone in part because wood is very dry. Is it possible that your guitar could have a good (better) tone but it is not the tone you know and after few weeks you'll like it....better ?

I wish you give some news about that .

I really hope so! I'm meeting with my luthier next week for him to have a second look to the guitar and see what he can do to suit the instrument according to my needs and expectations. I'll keep you posted.

Yes see your luthier, and if you can explain very well what are you looking for or what you think you loose in tone maybe he can narrow is checkup .

Like tightened all neck ,bridge and tuner screw......

Escuse my question but your luthier , is it a good one ? I read very often some bad story about anybody who said he is a luthier.......and not able to fix a guitar.

yes he is a very good luthier but as he said if he only knew how the tone was before this thing happened... but he's going to narrow the checkup next time and I hope he's going to find the problem.
