I was looking at an Esquier Tele on ebay, the guitar only had one pick-up, no problem, why does it have what appears to be a pick up selector switch in front of the tone and volume dials??

I am seriously curious, so once you finish laughing at my ignorance please clue me in my Fender Homies.

Been wondering this question myself...

As I understand it, that selector switch puts various caps in the circuit to change the tone of the pickup.

An Esquire is a surprisingly versatile instrument because of that circuit design.

The esquire 3 way selector works like this:

Position 1 - Pickup without tone control
Position 2 - Pickup with the tone control pot working
Position 3 - Pickup with tone control AND a different capacitor inline to give a darker tone.

Esquire's are remarkably versatile guitars, especially when you take into account that there's only one pickup... 8)

Exactly what AjayTele said, and I will add that some people claim that Esquires allow the strings to ring more and differently than a Telecaster because there is no magnetic pull from a neck pickup.

That's interesting, I've never gave that any thought. If that's true, just think how much extra magnet pull is on a strat.

What do the tone differences in those three switch positions sound like? Doesn't seem like there would be any difference between position 1 and 2, whether the tone pot is working or not, doesn't make much sense.

Well, I like position 1 because I like playing the bridge pickup without tone control - on a normal Tele you can occasionally accidentally bump the tone control...you can't do that on the Esquire in position 1.
