Jag stang,

Many many years ago, when I was young I found also telecaster very ugly. Since that time I discover the telecaster sound and the story of this fantastic guitar, and the story of fender with Leo.

Since 10 years now I have 2 telecaster and IMO it is one of the most beautiful guitar .

That is I call love or evolution

Blasphemy! The Telecaster is a work of art and should be respected. Another one of Kurt Cobains deciples i see rocking the trend of the Jag-Stang. 60 years or so and the Tele has stood the test of time.

I am not posting this to start a fight or insult someone elses taste. Please.

I want to like Teles, really, but I have just never established a taste for them. Given certain colors and neck combinations I can somewhat appreciate them but never to the point of buying one. They just look out of porportion. Secondly, I find them uncomfortable a awkward to play "seated". Standing is not so much a problem.

As they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", my brother loves them and I gave him a nice butterscotch blonde Squier Tele for Christmas a while back. One of my guitar buddies has a new Chinese built Fender Tele with the pine body and translucent black finish. He loves it. It had many nice sounds, but it kept wanting to fall away from me. I cannot get them to stay put.

Really the Strat is the only Fender that I like, so I will not go and buy up all the Teles and leave them for you guys that love and appreciate them. :)

a jagstang basically looks like the combined attempts of people on their first week of woodworking and electronics courses, people who eventually failed the courses........

i have 3 teles and a strat, my mates tell me my strat is the most boring to look at. some maybe less good looking, i'll be honest im not a huge fan of a bog standard tele, but this isnt ugly...........

2 things i dont like - std layout tele's, and sunburst. yet the binding on my 62 custom bring them together to make soemthing beautiful.

You can love the Tele all you want, but I will stick with my Jazzmaster, thank you! Now that's a good looking guitar :D.

I don't think Telecasters are ugly at all, a little simple and old-fashioned looking maybe, but not ugly. I prefer the Telecaster head to the Stratocaster, in fact I think that signature shape of the Stratocaster's head is THE ugliest guitar head ever designed.

Have you ever seen John 5's signature telecaster? I think it's one of the sexier guitars I've ever seen, and I've gotten the honor of being to play it a few times too.

IMO you can change anything on a Tele like pups. hardware. bridges and tremolos but you cant mess with the fundamentals like body and head stock shape!

Now that you mention it, I have a confession to make: I absolutely hate the chrome control plate on the classic Tele. :?
And what's even more frightening, it survives every remake. Every time I see a master-built “boutique” Tele, it has the damned thing on. It may have no pickguard, different pickups and even controls, it may have a gorgeous top made out of exotic and expensive wood – but nine times out of ten on top of all the splendour you’ll see the damned chromed oval with controls.
Frankly, I believe Leo Fender nailed the design with the Broadcaster prototype and then made a mistake, took a step backwards. I mean, look at the prototype, doesn’t it look more sleek?

Sounds like you may enjoy this John Cruz special. No Chrome or nickle. A little pricey though...

True enough, although I'm on board that most Teles are ugly--but then I don't really care what it looks like, but what it sounds like and how well you play it.

Teles aren't my thing, but they are other people's thing--and some of them did quite well--so if they're your thing--great.
If they're not your thing-great.

Just don't pick a guitar based mostly on looks

Well there are "Custom" made guitars that look worse--but it may be the worst looking Fender.
But it's not as bad as the Gibson Corvus--even on Gibson sites, they get little love.

Lets face it boys and girls, the only reason Leo started making the Strat is because some of the players that frequented his shop complained that the Tele was bruising their ribs and their arms when playing all night long. There is plenty of documentation to back this up. Otherwise, they loved the guitar! So, the "comfort contours" ended up with the Strat design which many still see as "sexy" and it is still the most copied (stolen, pirated, hi-jacked) guitar design ever.

None of this makes the Tele any less pretty and functional. And if you still think it is ugly, remember the words of Jimmy Soul:

"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So from my personal point of view
Get an ugly girl to marry you"
