I've just bought a new Fender telecaster 72' Deluxe and when i plug it in and turn the distortion on i get a strange buzzing sound. The buzz isn't from the distortion on the amp, i know this 100%. I've tried it through 2 different amps and i get the same problem when i turn the distortion on. The weird thing is when i touch the string or anything made of metal on the guitar then the buzzing stops. So when i play there is no buzzing but when i take my hands off all the strings it comes back. Also when i touch anything else metallic from anything that's plugged into the same extension lead the buzz goes. I don't think it's harmful but if i can get rid of it then i want to. Thanks.

It certainly sounds like a ground problem. I'd be taking it in to a Fender repair center for warranty work.

This is a really common problem and one that's often mis-diagnosed. The issue is not with the grounding of your guitar, it's with the screening of the wiring (and possibly the pickups) within it.

All the time, all sorts of radio/mains interference is constantly 'hitting' your body and when you sit or stand with your guitar in front of you, the un-screened electrical wiring inside is picking this interference up - from you. This is the buzzing you hear when you're plugged in and not touching the strings.

When you touch the strings, you are grounding yourself through the guitar, so the interference stops. That's why I'm almost sure there's nothing wrong with the grounding of your guitar. If there was, the buzzing would get much worse when you touched the strings or bridge, not better.

The answer is usually to screen the cavities of the guitar - either with conductive paint or copper foil - and to connect this to the ground point of the wiring (normally the case of the volume/tone pots). There are plenty of articles out there on t'internet that explain how to do this.

Hope that helps!
