Hello all! I'm new to the community, but not new to Fender guitars. Bought my first Fender (J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster) three years ago after playing Epiphones before, and I have never looked back! Now own a standard tele and a Jimmie Vaughan Stratocaster as well, and I can't get enough!

Anyway, I have a question I hope the much wiser experts here on the board can help me with. I've been itching for a Fender Telecaster Plus Version 1 for a little bit now, and as you probably know, the market for them has been crazy lately (going anywhere from $950 to $2000 on ebay). I found one locally that I is a color I like and with a maple fretboard (my preference), and I can get it for $1000 even... the only problem is that it's been modded with a silver lace sensor in the middle pickup position. Questions then are:

1) Were all the bodies routed with a middle position pickup, or did this mod likely alter the body?

2) Will this hurt the value of the guitar sufficiently that I should stay away?

Any insight would be helpful and appreciated. Peace and keep playing!

In '95 / '97 fender made 3 pickups version with 3 gold lace sensor pickups. If you go to search on Google , ( image ) you'll see a lot of picture of them

Sorry I'm just not sure about the old Tele Plus v1 bodies; I'm pretty sure they had their own routing that was different from the American Standards to fit in that bridge Lace Dually Red pickup. Of course the v2 Tele Plus has a middle pickup as did the first year or so of the American Deluxe Tele. I think that the middle pickup route is still there, having been carried forward through the current (i.e. post 2010/v3) American Deluxes. I think that the American Standard bodies also have had the center pickup route since at least 1995 when the Tele Plus v2 came out.

I'll do some digging and see if I can find a photo of a Tele Plus v1 body disassembled.

EDIT: Okay - I turned up a photo of a Tele Plus v1 with the pickguard and bridge pickup removed - it appears these had a "mini-swimming-pool" route under the pickguard then the separate humbucker-sized route for the bridge pickup. I found this over on the TDPRI - the Telecaster Discussion Page:

So adding a middle pickup shouldn't have resulted in additional routing.

Wow, thank you so much for finding that. I have no idea how you managed it.

So, do you think it still hurts the guitars value that it has this mod? My main concern is that if I play it for awhile and don't like it, I'll be stuck with a $1000 guitar that no one will touch because it's been modded. Any opinions there?

Thanks - I just did a google search for "Fender Telecaster Plus"; it turned up a thread on TDPRI called "Telecaster Plus Owners Club". I belong to TDPRI from back when I had a Tele (I'm just a generic "Fender fan" these days; I've only kept my old Lead II) so I just flipped through the thread and found this photo in it.

I would think that, given there is no routing, as long as you have the original neck and bridge pickups you could return it to original spec with a replacement picguard and some quick rewiring.
