Hey fellow Tele connoisseurs! I have a new question today. After looking at Drew365's new Jim Adkins Tele, I've gotten to thinking, and instead of buying another Schecter or a Strat I think I would like to look into another Tele; but if my next guitar is a Tele I want it to be something a bit more obscure. I do like the JA90 like in Drew's post, but I'd be interested to see what else is available that's a little different than an average run-of-the-mill Tele.
So...What more obscure Teles are out there guys?
Being relatively new to Teles, I've never really noticed (or paid attention for that matter) to what's been available other than the common models.

If you look hard enough, you'll find many that don't fit this mold :

I hope someday to have a Rosewood Tele, although you can buy used vintage '69s and '70s they generally run at over $15,000 so my only option realistically would be a MIJ rosewood that I'd most likely have to get through http://www.japanguitars.com/ they sell MIJ Fenders of every type that aren't available in North America and for pretty good prices due to the dollar/yen values.

I had an Andy Summers inspired Tele built from parts.

Maple neck, "v" shape
3-color-sunburst w/ white binding
SD Jazz HB in the neck position
Tele pup in the bridge
After Burner 20db volume boost pot
mid-range scoop tone pot
Volume knob
Brass bridge and saddles
5 way switch (1. HB, 2. single coil, 3. HB & bridge pup, 4. single coil & bridge pup and 5. single poil).

It's a pretty unique guitar. It doesn't look or sound like anything else I know of. I can play every form of music with this guitar. I get great 60's Clapton tone as well as the Police.

Bottom line. Buy a Tele you like, change out the guts and make it your own. Or go to Warmoth or Allparts and make whatever floats your boat.

Good luck!

I'd love a rosewood Tele at some point. I don't think I could afford one though, but I'd be perfectly happy one built from Warmoth parts and with P90s or a bridge HB and a P90 in the neck position...you got the wheels turning my friend, now I have to go check how much a rosewood Tele body would run. 8)

Hi Tim

Depends what you mean by obscure. There are several models in the stable already that may giove you a different slant on the telecaster

1. Blacktop - 2 humbuckers
2. Deluxe - 3 single coils
3. Vintage Hot Rod - mini SD humbucker neck pickup
4. Road Worn Players - SD humbucker in the neck position

I have a Blacktop and a Deluxe Blackout

The Deluxe Blackout is a very under rated and under publicised guitar in my mind and is one of my favourites to play.

Obscure....how about an Esquire-type with a swamp ash body, Warmoth Boat Neck and Pau Ferro fingerboard, Stainless Steel frets, Seymour Duncan Broadcaster pup, Bio Shield Aqua Resin floor finish (Tangerine Dream).

Not mine, but a nice git!

I guess it depends on what you mean by obscure, the 72 Deluxe is a good shout. I still regret trading mine up, I'll replace it someday though. The Tele in my siggy pic sounds right up your street, it's a CIJ Vintage 62 Custom CAR. It's an amazing guitar, as well as hot looking. Good luck in your search, remember the pix 8)

I have considered the Blacktop, but I think I like the '72 Deluxe suggestion that was posted...and I'm already set in the Deluxe Blackout Dept.

Tim,

You should really look at the entire '72 Series. I think I have them pretty well covered and really like them.

I've got one of the new AVRI '72 Custom's in black. It's a great guitar. I have the exact guitar MIM, and the MIM is 95% of the AVRI. That's not dogging the AVRI, I just think the MIM is that nice.

I also have a MIM '72 Thinline in a natural finish. Dual humbuckers. I find my best sound out of the middle position. I think I'm going to spring for the new AVRI in red as well.

Also have a MIM '72 Deluxe in walnut. I always get "wierded out" with the big Strat headstock, but the neck on that guitar is awesome. I don't get it out much, but when I do, it tends to be my main player for several weeks.

I really enjoy my '72 series Tele's - they are very much a Tele, but just different enough to stand out from the pack. I think you'd really like one of them.

You might also take a look at the Baja Tele. I honestly think that if I could only own one Tele, it would be my Baja. Check them out too!

The MIM 72 deluxe you referenced above is the one I've been looking at the most, I really like that one. And I think it's kinda cool with the Strat headstock.
As for the Baja, they are nice, but not a whole lot about them that set's them apart from other Teles. Not that that's a problem either, I just really like the "different" Teles out there.

My main tele is a 52 hot rod, but I also have a Japanese 50 model, that now has texas specials, a four position switch (forth position both pickups in series) and a bigsby B5 kit.

Makes for a very different guitar to the hot rod, the bigsby makes a big difference.

Also looking to build a thinline with TV Jones filtertrons using Warmoth parts.
