I submitted a post earlier this evening regarding a neck issue with this guitar. Well, when I received the guitar I thought they had changed or "modernized" Candy Apple Red. It looked more like another Tele I had that was Candy Cola Red. So I look up my photos and there is a distinct difference in Candy Apple and the actual color of my Nashville. This is the second so-called Candy Apple I have owned and the colors are completely different. I went back to the Fender website and found their color chart. To my surprise and, beyond a shadow of a doubt, this Nashville is Candy Cola Red! Whassup with that???

I was just talking about the same thing (well, sorta) over in the Strat forum. I had mentioned that it seemed like there are a lot of different "shades" of CAR.

As Retroverbial explained to me...
Quote:
Most of the differences are attributable to the color of the undercoat. The brighter "more red" CAR's use silver, while the darker "more warmer" shades have gold underneath. Likewise the clear topcoat (if used) and how it ages plays a role in the appearance.

I think photographing some of these colors is a challenge... color swatches and photographs all show different shades. In the case of your Nashville tele, it's an MIM model (as is the Blacktop Strat body I'm building up) but like yourself, I thought it looked darker than usual...similar to Candy Cola. However, it's unlikely that it's actually candy cola because they don't use Candy Cola on an MIM models... just on the American Standards. It's possible that they're using a different (darker) undercoat and as Retroverbial mentioned, this would effect the shade of red.

I've seen some Candy Cola finished guitars and they have am added dimension of color...I can't put my finger on it but it IS darker than CAR.

Anyhow... both CAR and CC are gorgeous colors no matter how you stack it! :)

I have found variations within a few different colors--CAR, CCR, Hot Rod Red, Olympic White...sometimes it's due to aging and fading, but sometimes they look different from the very beginning.

Fiesta Red is another color that has vast differences; I know some of the differences are due to age/fading, but sometimes a (new) Fiesta Red guitar will look very orange-y (such as my '62 Re-issue Stratocaster; it looks like the bright burnt orange that I associate with Fiesta Red), but I've seen others that have more of a pinkish hue.

The guitar is really hard to photograph as well. Sometimes it looks like Day-Glo orange and other times it looks somewhat like a Hot Rod Red, and sometimes it looks like what it is--Fiesta Red. I don't know enough about photography (nor do I have a "professional" camera to take good pics with) to get a really good picture of my Strat.

Make sure that you have something absolute black and absolute white on the picture, together with the strat. Make sure there is enough natural light, but no direct light. This means you have to wait for good light. Usually early morning or before sunset.

If you do this, you can make a good pic with a standard camera.

Cheers

David

Here's one for you.In 2006 I got a Nashville Deluxe Tele and it's color by the book is Brown Burst. As you can see in the photo (guitar on the left) it is three tone sunburst. Its also is listed as alder wood and it is ash.Not that I am unhappy but it doe's blow my mind.

Hey KC!

When I click on your picture of your two guitars and go to your Photobucket page, there's a larger picture of your two guitars. It looks to me, aging pro woodworker that I am (and occasional user of red alder), that your Tele is indeed alder, not ash. Ash weighs about twice as much as alder and has a much more distinct grain. Your guitar looks pretty much like all of my alder guitars.

My Tele is indeed ash,it came with a sticker saying ash body and it feels as heavy as my Les Paul's (11+ Lb's).Yes I know that alder can be heavy also, but my Tele is indeed ash.The photo is not that good because in person the tele is spot on three tone sunburst and the grain in the wood is much more pronounced and matches the Strat next to it which is also ash.Now they may be a low grade of ash Both are MiM made in 2006.
