So if you were looking for a HW1 and didn't already own one, what would buy? Something that is in production now. But trying to keep the price below $1500.

Just as a point of intrest and not related to the question, the HW1's are still instock (new) in some online stores for around $500-$900. The tele I took a picture of in GC was around $1500. I really think guitars need to be played before you buy. Every guitar has it's own personality.

Yep there are still some HGWY 1 in stock in shops and online, if you could find a 2011 model with the 60th logo neckplate that would be a nice one for the future. All depends on what you want, if your set on an American made guitar them the Am Specials and Am Standard would be the playing field initially but shopping around you may get a deal on Am deluxe for example. But don't discount the Mexican Made guitars one may surprise you.

As you say playing the guitars before buying is ideal as they soemtimes tend to pick you out rather you picking them out.

Actually I own a HSS Mexican 60th Strat and really like it. But in a Tele MM like other American Tele's. Just don't the feel and sound the way I like it.
What about a reissued model?

Its all about what feels good to you. Never played a reissue and to be honest haven't seen many of the up close so couldn't really comment. If they are in your price range then why not
