Hi GSSPIKE

Can you post a pick of the HGWY 1 in question?

Based on the serial number it would be a 2005/06 model maybe just before or just after the relaunch that occured in 2006.

e-mail consumerrelations@fender.com with the serial number and they will send you the specifications for the guitar.

Thanks for putting the pics on.

If it is indeed a HGWY1 it looks like it is a 2006 revamped model as it has the extra pickguard screws i believe the originals only had 5. I don't remember seeing them with a tortoise shell pickguard though. Including the headstock in the photo would have helped but not to worry.

e-mail fender and they will confirm / tell you what actual model it is.

good luck let us know what they say

Does any one know of a direct replacement for this guitar or a close match?

The HIGHWAY 1 series was revamped in 2006 (thats why it says discontinued 7/2006 on the info they sent you) and although no official confirmation has been put out we believe the Highway One series has been discontinued as of mid 2011. They are not now listed on the Telecaster pages of the website.

Thanks for putting up the headstock photo, it helped to narrow it down to the 'old' version HGWY 1, that was one of the design changes in the revamp.

Are the upgraded 06 and up really an upgrade or a lowering to boost sales of the American Tele?

What do people think about the new ones?

I've played this 60th anniversary Tele Made in US at Guitar Center. It just didn't feel the same and to me sounded a little less bright. Don't get me wrong, I did like it.

I did liked it better than any other one in the store. I tried all of them twice, 2 visits to the store.
You can't see the 60th in the photo because that is where the glare is on the silver sticker.

Oh and it's almost twice the price of the HW1.

In many ways the Highway 1 series has been over taken by the American Special series launched in 2010. Price wise the Special sat more or less between the HGWY and the American Standard. This may be the reason why the series has been discontinued.

We will have to wait and see if Fender is planning to replace the HGWY series with another US made model in that price bracket or whether in these economic times they have made the decision that if you want an american made guitar then you have to pay for it (approx prices in the UK the HGWY £638, AM Special £750, Am Standard (£1000). The Mexican standards are around £400 so you can see the difference in price and extra £350 for an american made guitar.

The guitar in your photo looks like an american standard, all Teles made this year carry the 60th anniversary neck plate and are promoted under the 60th anniversary banner.

I have various models of Tele's: Blacktop, Blackout, 2 mex standards, Am Deluxe, 60th Anniversary and the HGWY 1 and i must say the HGWY is quickly becoming one of my favourites.

So if you were looking for a HW1 and didn't already own one, what would buy? Something that is in production now. But trying to keep the price below $1500.

Just as a point of intrest and not related to the question, the HW1's are still instock (new) in some online stores for around $500-$900. The tele I took a picture of in GC was around $1500. I really think guitars need to be played before you buy. Every guitar has it's own personality.
