Sorry but Avril Lavigne doesn't qualify as a musician. Not even close.

she does sing and "play guitar" so i suppose she is a musician... no matter how much you respect her or not, a musician is a musician

At least she's a musician! I mean Gibson has a Kiefer Sutherland model 335... What the???

What are you talking about? When people talk about great guitarists, they often talk about Hendrix, Clapton, Van Halen, Vai, Johnson, and Sutherland, who has the best technique, chops, and phrasing out of them all!

Just kidding...for me that was the sign that Gibson had indeed lost their minds...

Gibson discontinues the Ace Frehley model and introduces a Keifer Sutherland one.Make sense out of that one and get a premium membership to MENSA...

Okay, Kiefer Sutherland owns a recording studio and a record label. He has for a while. The signature series guitar helps bring attention to the musical side of his career, it's not because he's an actor, it's because he owns an indie label. You people embarrass yourselves by commenting before researching. And Avril Lavigne still sucks.

Your definition of a musician is painfully loose. A kid with crayons is not Van Gogh and an un-talented girl who is fed lyrics and holds a guitar is not a musician.

I'm being mean for trying to take a stand against the Avril-bashing?! Good grief!

no offence but thats not exactly the best comparison. That would be "a kid with crayons is not van gogh and an un-talented girl who is fed lyrics and holds a guitar is not Hendrix." A kid with crayons can be an artist therefore she can be considered a musician. I'm not a fan of avril, but she is a musician, albeit one who i do not personally find talented. Keep in mind music is a form of art and therefore a form of expression. If someone doesn't like it does that make it any less art? It does not rely solely on talent but mostly on expression. (yes she probably doesn't write a lot of her own stuff) but in the act of playing it, its an expression. Like it or not shes a musician. Sorry.

I had a feeling this would turn into a "What is Art?" debate.

I make art for video games. Its not about sefl expression for me...it a job. I do what the game/company needs. Does that make me less of an artist? I don't think so.

I think art is simply the result of creation, whether that be a painting, a program, or a cupcake. It can even be abstract, like creating a process.

From there, you have specific types of art. Visual art has the most common association with the word, but music is also common.

Good or Bad, Skilled or Unskilled is just a matter of degree and preference. For instance, I am also a musician. Most would consider me a bad musician, myself include, but that does not exclude me from that catagory (can I have a signature guitar now?)

Now, does Avril's degree of mastery warrent her own signature guitar? Is the creation of a signature guitar even based on merit or simply Fender playing upon popularity/respect to increase sales? I doubt their motivation is purely out of the goodness of their hearts.

If it gets more young folks to
take up playing the guitar,,,
what difference does it make ???

Music is about expression,,, not
everyone expresses themselves
the same...

Kiefer Sutherland may own a recording studio and an indie label, but I still don't see why that qualifies him for getting a signature guitar. If all you had to do was own a recording studio and an indie label to get a guitar, then 1/3 of myspace and facebook should have signature guitars too. You might as well give Richard Branson a signature model while you're at it because he owns a major record label, an airline, and more crap than I could ever imagine, so when is Gibson going to to make the Richard Branson signature model, because he needs to refocus attention to the musical side of his career. Avril may suck, but at least she tours and puts out records instead of Keifer making some lame- ss rockumentary or doing 24 about 24 times already....

No it's not about art. It's about marketing (read DOLLARS) so Fender or Gibson or Gretsch (Brian Setzer or Bono models) or Squier can sell guitars. These companies are manufacturers and product is guitars. Fender will charge you a lot of money to buy a limited edition, e.g., G. E. Smith model. They all do it, and Gibson is really bad; did you see the price of that Slash Les Paul???

I hope that Squier doen't charge a lot of money for that Avril L. guitar. FWIW I think she has a great voice, and I seriously doubt she is playing that guitar with the volume pot beyond 1 on a scale of 10.

that is right, this is all about money!!! and besides if it motivates a young girls to pick up the guitar, and become the next Bonnie Raitt or Jennifer Batten or somthing, then isn't it worth it?? I mean is this really any worse than the tom delonge strat from a few years back? i mean really!!!

Oh and on another note i agreee with bowl freshener on the whole keifer sutherland thing give me a break he is an avg actor, and who care if he has a record label or anything. that is a joke, should Martin give one to jaquein phoneix since he did play one in the movie about Johnny Cash???
