I'm purchasing a '72 Telecaster Deluxe. It has two volume pots, two tone pots, and a three-way pickup selector.

I was assuming that each pickup is controlled independently by a pair of volume-tone pots. But it doesn't seem to work like that.

In either bridge or neck pickup mode, each volume pot controls the volume of the corresponding pickup. But when both pickups are active (that is, the pickup selector is in the middle position), turning either one of the volume pots down will mute the guitar! Is this how it's supposed to be on this model?

Thanks :)

Yes, it is. However, you can change the wiring of the pots to where this won't happen per your assumption above:

Remove the pickguard and flip it over. You will see that each volume pot has a lead soldered to it's left terminal coming from it's pickup and a lead soldered to the middle terminal coming from the toggle switch. Simply reverse these leads on the terminals to where the pickup's lead would be soldered to the center terminal and the toggle's lead would be soldered to the left terminal. Do it for both pots and that's it.
