I bought myself a present last week in celebration of landing a new job after two years (I was working, but not doing what I wanted to do). After several weeks of trying out guitars at my local Guitar Center, I decided on a new 52 Tele Reissue and I'm glad I did. This guitar is beautiful! I love the feel and sound (Except I hate 60 cycle hum. More on that in a minute.). The finish, especially the neck is stunning. I was surprised at how heavy the tweed case/guitar combo is, though. Should build up my arms nicely hefting that thing around.

Normally I mod all of my guitars pretty heavily. This one I have decided to keep basically stock with a few (for me) improvements. Since I hate 60 cycle hum, I have ordered a set of Seymour Duncan Vintage Stack noiseless pickups (All of my other guitars have either Humbuckers or noiseless pickups). They should be here next week. I have rewired the guitar in the modern scheme, except I have the tone control set up with the Greasebucket circuit (I put it on all my Fenders) along with vintage 50's tone control hookup to the volume pot. Makes for a much better sounding tone circuit (to me anyway) with less loss of highs as the volume control is rolled down. I am also replacing the Oak-Grigsby pickup switch with a 3-way CRL switch (I think the CRL is better built than the O-G), and I've installed a mil-spec Switchcraft phone jack ( I use them in all my guitars. Much better grip on the plug.). I also will be installing a set of Callaham compensated saddles.

Oh, since I name all my guitars, this one's name is "Butterbean". Here she is:

And my entire Fender family from left to right:

Butterbean, Blues Deluxe Reissue, Big Red (modded MIM Standard Strat), Frontman 25R, Buttercup (highly modded Squier "Nocaster").

LOL @ "keep basically stock" You already changed 75 percent of the key components of the 52.

You will regret the pickup swap.

Compared to how I have modded all my other guitars, the 52 is still "basically stock". What part of "I hate 60 cycle hum" was not clear? Besides, it's my guitar to do what I want with.

You could have saved some cash by picking up an American Standard and then administering the same modifications. Nice guitar tho, by the way!

Well, if I had wanted an American Standard, I would have done that. But I didn't; I wanted a 52. I like the looks of the 52 and the way it feels and plays. None of my mods detract from that.

Me too...I looked up that phrase on google...I got that C'est bien loosely translates to 'it is well' but ça is a widely used word that seems to mean whatever the hell you want it too...I'm still confused. :?

Congratulations on your new Telecaster! I wish you good luck! I guess you bought it more for the feel and the looks than the tone. Everyone is allowed to have their own idea of what sounds good and what to do to a guitar to make it how they want it. There is something about the 52 that beckons all tele players. I have had two, selling one when I needed money. The one I have now is pretty much my most favorite tele and I have seven of them. There is something very earthy about my 52 and I would not change a thing, especially when I play it through my Blues DeVille 410! I also usually buy a low end guitar and modify by upgrading pups, pots etc. I have even built a Nashville Partscaster in all black with Jason Lollars, which sounds better than any Strat! My 52 will remain unchanged and continue its life as it was orginally built, I mean isn't that why most of us buy one?

I am puzzled by all the comments about my planned mods to my guitar. This is the only forum I have posted in that I have received such comments.

With the exception of installing the Callaham compensated saddles, none of the mods are visible to the naked eye. In my opinion, the CRL switch is a better switch than the Oak-Grigsby switch that Fender installed (They used the same O-G switch in my $500 MIM Standard Strat. CRL was what Fender originally used. They couldn't use a CRL in a $1500 guitar?). The mil-spec phone jack is better fitting and less likely to lose electrical contact than what Fender uses. I install them in all of my guitars. I happen to prefer the mix of modern and vintage tone circuit wiring with the Greasebucket to what comes stock. Finally, I hate 60 cycle hum. End of story.

Bottom line, this guitar is a REISSUE of a 52 Tele, made in a modern factory using modern methods. Other than the fact that I really love the guitar, to me it is just a guitar, to do with as I please.

You are correct in doing what ever you want to with any guitar you buy. I guess the Tle police consider a 52 to be pretty much the father of all teles. The mods you are making are as you say to the guts of the guitar and do not affect the visual look or feel of the 52. But a 52 is a 52 and though it is made in a more modern factory, it is still built with the idea of replicating the original. they all come with a modern wiring kit that is included as accessories. If you buy a 62 re-issue or a Vintage Hot Rod or even a Nashville tele, you are buying it for the tone and parts that make that particular guitar sound the way it does. I think less people would comment if you took an American Standard tele and did the same modifications. You are not alone in making changes to a 52. Springsteen plays a few different 52's but all have had Joe Bardens Pickups installed because Bruce likes their range of tones. I am also no stranger to modifications. In my lite ash Korean Tele I put in SCN Noiseless Pups, an S-1 switch. I feel I improved the guitar with those up grades. It gives me a nice range of tones which I can't replicate with any other of my teles. My Nashville tele, can out play any Strat on the market, again, this is a guitar with a set of three Jason Lollar pickups that can give me a fuller range of tones that I can't get with my other teles. I have an FSR American Tele that is made of Ash and it's pretty bright compared to the others. I am not trying to be a critic, but I have always believed that the parts of a guitar, and I am not talking about the jack that may give a better connection, but all of the pots, switches, wiring, body, neck and pick ups create that guitars general tone. For most players modifying a 52 is sacrilegious. Please understand we don't mean any ill feelings towards you. Everyone wants you to have the kind of guitar you want and will enjoy playing. The forum is just a way to discuss matters such as these. It is not a personal attack, just a general observation to your modifications. As I said, congratulations and enjoy your new guitar and I hope it will give you many years of great enjoyment.

Like I said, this is the only forum I have posted on (posted the same thing on TDPRI, Strat-Talk, and TGP) where people have been critical of what I am doing. Guess I've said all I really need to say. Please note that I am not new to these forums.

Thanks.
