Just bought an new American de luxe 2011 tele, and with it, I got a black plastic hard case.

I wonder, did I get the wrong case for it? The padding on the inside got two cut outs for a strat like guitar, so even if my tele fits in the case, it would seem like a tele case, especially on the more expensive models, should have a tele cut out padding.

Here is my American Deluxe case and the guitar in its case. I got it in 2009. The same case is used for the 60th Anniversary Telecaster. I believe this is the Feder Standard molded Strat/Tele SKB case.

Strangely, Fender isn't consistent between American Deluxe Tele and Strat cases. I have an American Deluxe Tele and Stratocaster, as well as an American Standard Stratocaster. These are the cases that came with them (and are what is advertised in Fender's product description):

Am. Deluxe Telecaster - Rectangular TSA plastic case
Am. Deluxe Stratocaster - Body contoured plastic case, not TSA rated
Am. Std. Stratocaster - Rectangular TSA case

I was hoping to get another rectangular case with my Deluxe Strat - that way the would all stack together.

It depends on the year of the guitar - the TSA-spec rectangular cases started with the "new" American Standards in 2008. However, the American Deluxes didn't change to the new case; they kept using the body contoured case pretty much until they ran out of them - sometime after the middle of 2009 I began seeing a few American Deluxes in the new rectangular cases. The 2010-spec American Deluxes should have always come in the rectangular case.

Ok, interesting, I cant really tell from the picture, but is its interior molded to fit a strat as well?

Yes either guitar shape will fit the case (if your using a laptop change the angle of your screen and you should see the strat horns clearly)

The only con to the case, in my mind is the lack of a flap over the stash area.

That, and the stash area could be a little bigger to accommodate pedals.

I'd never put pedals in there - it's for picks, your slide, light stuff.

The Fender cases I bought back in the 90s were all molded to fit either a Strat or a Tele. It's nice because I can swap guitars into different cases when I am playing out.

54, give or take. The son has a few of them right now, the son-in-law has one of them.

I have 60 plus guitars and keep none in cases. All are on rocker stands ready to grab. I agree with Les Paul who said to take your guitars out of the dam cases and put them where you'll play them..

Re Fender cases. I never leave home with a Fender case. I use a quality beat up case. 'Fender' or 'Gibson' on a case is like a big sign saying 'steal me'.

Re an earlier remark about Gibson cases. So true. I just picked up a Melody Maker for peanuts and now I have 3 different Gibson size cases. Unique case for the Les Paul, SG and Melody Maker.
