Just bought an new American de luxe 2011 tele, and with it, I got a black plastic hard case.

I wonder, did I get the wrong case for it? The padding on the inside got two cut outs for a strat like guitar, so even if my tele fits in the case, it would seem like a tele case, especially on the more expensive models, should have a tele cut out padding.

From what I understand the american deluxe tele should come with a strat/tele molded SKB case. It is supposed to be black plastic and should fit both a telecaster and stratocaster. I believe you have the right case.

Even though the Tele sure fits in the case, it looks kind of strange having the telecaster in a padding made for a Strat type body.

Sure it would make sense for a budget kind of guitar, lets say an instrument that costs 350 USD. But for an instrument that costs closer to 1800 USD?

Are you sure about this? Can someone else confirm this?

Yes, Fender has always used cases that could fit a Strat or a Tele going back to Leo's day - well at least since they went to rectangular tweed cases sometime in the mid-50s. If you look at the G&G tweed or tolex cases they don't even try to be form-fitting; it's just an open area for the guitar's body.

Fender uses the same molded case for the American Standards and American Deluxes; they are designed to fit both Strats and Teles.

For a $350 guitar you're not even going to get a case; just a reasonably decent (but not great) gig bag if you're lucky. Of course you could always buy an aftermarket case.

You're not going to find a case with a truly form-fitted interior (i.e. one interior for Strats and one for Teles) on anything cheaper than say a Suhr, Anderson or Grosh. Even then Suhr ships their "Pro Series" (guitars made to one spec with the only option being color as opposed to a 100% custom-spec guitar) models in gig bags; they will set you back over $2K. Grosh also has a "Standard" line of guitars with fixed specs (only options is the color); they come in a G&G case that is like a Fender G&G case with the open area for the body instead of the fitted area that comes with their "Custom" models (Anderson only does custom-spec models; if you find one at a dealer then the dealer set the specs).

In the case of the Suhrs - you can "upgrade" to the fitted case for about $75 extra - their gig bag costs $125, their case costs about $200.

One thing I remember from being a kid, and my friends having Strats, and Teles, they all had the same style hard case. This was back in the mid eighties, so...

Most Gibson's over a grand also include hard cases that are formfitting. SG's Standards and up. Les Paul's Some Studios an up. Everything else costs so damn much, they better come with quality hard case.

The "correct" case is the SKB case that is TSA approved. This means, that the key provided with your case matches #002 that the TSA has, allowing you to take the case on an airplane. With this key type, the airlines can open up your case and inspect it without damaging your instrument or case. For me, I was thrilled to recieve this case with my purchase!

No its the right case. That is my Fender hardshell case that came with my Fender American Series Tele and it has a Stratocaster cutout if you look hard enough since its a black guitar and its a lack lining its hard to see but that is just to make it universal for their 2 most famous guitar models basic shapes instead of making 2 different cases the company saves time and money that way :D

Interestingly enough, you do not have the same case as I. My case is square shaped. But it´s similar in that you bought a tele and got a "one size fits all" case.

Yeah they give hard shell cases with guitars over a certain amount of $ I bought mine in 2007 for $1,100 so they had different cases out then and probably just changed what one came with them :) (and thats chrome on my Tele the lighting just makes the chrome have a slight gold color lol)

Yes, but an open area interior would seem to be a different issue, by making it "open", it would be obvious that they would go for a one size fits all, but if they actually go for a molding interior, it is less obvious, and that is what lead me to believe that I might got a case for a strat rather than my tele, even though it still fits.

Yes, this is the exact case I have, now I know for sure that it is the correct type of case I have.

But I still wonder, did you buy a tele? and got a case with a double cut away strat interior? That is, a strat can fit in there as well?

I am not worried about the guitar being damaged in the case, however, I bought the guitar new, and would really prefer getting the guitar as original as possible.

Well when I got my guitar I got mine ordered directly from Fender. Did you get yours from a store? The only people who would know are 1.Fender 2. the place you got it or 3. people who just bought an expensive Tele. So email Fender with your serial number if you're looking for a accurate answer I did and they told me what case came with my guitar :)
