About a year ago i purchased an American Standard Natural Ash Telecaster. I love the look and tone of the guitar. The neck definitely feels the best compared to every other guitar i have owned. I just can't seem to keep the damned thing in tune. Now, i have been playing guitar for close to 20 years. I know how to string a guitar correctly. I know how to stretch new strings correctly. I have had two luthiers that i respect and trust very much set up the intonation and do neck adjustments. They also worked on the nut. I LOVE this guitar, but i am very saddened that my first real "American" Tele can't seem to stay in tune. Suggestions? HELP, PLEASE!!

Do you do a lot of bends? There may be some binding at the nut, just write in the nut's string slots with a pencil a bit and see if that does anything, because even though the nuts been worked on, some binding may be occuring after usage and wear if its been awhile since the nust has been worked on...Just a thought.

Yeah, i don't think it is the nut. I could be wrong. I have tried something like that before. I didn't help. But thanks for the reply. I appreciate any input.

What size strings do you use? If you use 9's, I highly recommend you bump up to 10's.

Sounds like a plan to me. That's weird considering my mexican tele stays in tune pretty well, for at least two days at a time.

Check the screw in bushings for your tunners, they might be a little loose!
Don't over tighten them either, snug is all thats needed.
I say this because it's unbelievable to me, the numbers of guitars I've found in stores, with the bushings loose and the instability of the tuner shafts due that one thing.

On the American standard theres an allen screw on each of the tuners. Tighten those and see what it does. Let us know how that goes.

I had the guitar set up to use 10 gauge strings. I always use that gauge. I did check to make sure the bushings on the tuning machines were tightened down. I forgot to mention that i recently changed the tuning machines to the Schaller locking machines. And yes, i do know how to string them properly. But, it didn't help the problem much. Thanks for all of the replies so far. I really appreciate all of you. I am pretty sure that i have tried everything. This really sucks.

i have a similar problem with a similar guitar only mine is a diluxe for what that is worth/counts. from the get go-i've had it less than 6mos-i had the ever-present problem tuning the G and B. the old wound to flat string thing. i also had the set up -felt damn good from the shop-,intonation,etc adjusted and still always seem to be a little out. also, i do get a bit of difference between using harmonics and the 4th fret to open string method and the harmonic is always sharp in comparision. it just sounds like it has to be the intonation but they all tell me no and i can't set intonation myself so i have to trust them and i do. i have a bridge w/ individual saddles and i wonder if you do to or is it the older style? not sure it matters. i have never used an electronic tuner myself though i'm sure the good ones are very accurate. i've been reluctant to use one because i really think you have to do it by ear or you'll lose an important part of your "ear". plus, i think i can tune up by ear much faster than hooking upto a tuner and then having to change the battery ,etc. i hope someone has some ideas cause it drives me crazy. i do find myself reaching for the tele 90% of the time tho and still love it to pieces. the ash just sings and i'm already looking for a brother for it. i guess i try to compensate by tuning up as good as i can and then i will invariably sweeten up to few open chords-A,E,G. you know the routine. sorry i could not help but maybe it'll atract more attention who know more than me which seems to be just about everyone in this great forum. good luck and i know you play 'er anyway. i do.

Yeah, it seems like the G and B string are the ones that give me the most problems.
