Hello I own a Fender American Series Telecaster 2007 model black with a white pickguard and a maple neck.I was wondering why Fender discontinued American Series in 2007 and went back to American Standard. Its just something I'm curious about I looked on the internet and cant seem to find any info about why. That and I noticed I cant seem to find any Fender American Series Tele's being sold online used either I just seem to find parts and the only American Series I've seen are like early 2001 Strats on ebay nothing later in the years they were out.Have they become rare or hard to find especially the Tele's?Maybe people are collecting them since they wont be made anymore?I haven't even seen them in guitar stores one site said they had them then you click them and then it says they are American Standards.Thank you for any input :)

I may be mistaken but I believe they are essentially the same with a few upgrades... new saddles, thinner undercoat, rolled fingerboard edges. I think the names American Standard and American Series are frequently interchanged. I'd suspect that's why you're only finding American Standard Teles and parts on ebay, simply because they are most often referred to as American Standards, not American Series. There was a California Series back in the 90's... those are a bit harder to find and a distinctly different model. Those are easy to distinguish however as they have a vintage six saddle bridge and "California Series" on the headstock. Hope this helps.

Again, I'm not 100% sure about this so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

That could be right but I would assume someone dumping $1,000.00 into a guitar would know the diff. especially when they are selling it/or parts because then if they don't put the model down correctly you arent getting what you were promised specifically and especially if you're a collector looking for a certain year or certain parts and I actually have played the American Standard guitars and I dislike the finish on the necks. On my American Series Tele its so easy to slide and transition but on the Standards my fingers stuck more and I didnt like that too much :( That and I still wanna know why they changed back to Standard Series lol

Fender didn't do any favors by first renaming the guitar the "American Series" when they updated the line in 2000, and then by bringing back the "American Standard" name when they updated them again in 2008.

I suppose that people just use "American Standard" because that name has been used for most of this model's life span - it was first used for almost 15 years (from the first ones in late 1986 through mid-2000) before it was retired, and it has now been over 3 years since it was brought back. The "American Series" name was only used for 7 1/2 years (mid-2000 through the end of 2007). Why did they change the name back? Probably because a lot of people never caught on to calling the July 2000 - December 2007 models the "American Series"; in fact, I think Fender was even only calling it the "American Telecaster" instead of the "American Series Telecaster" by mid-2003 or so.

I suppose that people just like their American Series Teles; they are hanging on to them so you don't see a lot of them up used.

Thanks for the reply :) I personally agree with the last thing you said about how people most likely are holding onto them because I can see them being worth something years down the road due to them being a brief change of their main line of guitars.Kinda like the No-caster but not as big since these were around a lot longer and produce more lol. I love my American Series Tele a lot but I've been thinking of getting/trading my Tele for an American Deluxe Tele any year really.I used to play the deluxe at guitar center but I wasn't too fond of the neck. The action on my neck is amazing compared to the Deluxe and American standard necks I have no idea what they changed about the finish since my model.I love how the Deluxe Tele sounds and how it looks new and old at the same time (the aged cherry sunburst gives me that feeling) with that Ill be able to overlook the necks feel and get used to it :D

It's strange that the Deluxe Series has a wikipedia page but the American Standard Series does not :x considering it's been around since the 1980's (1986-2000). Even the pickups for the Deluxe Series has it's own wikipedia page  .
