i bought a 72' deluxe tele re-issue last week as a present for my girl...i started jamming on it and quickly realized that she is going to absolutely hate this guitar because of the monster sized frets and more so, the over all playability of the guitar, its terrible....after wanting to flip out on the person i bought it from because of the apparent fret wear that i was not aware of, i calmed myself and brought it in to discuss having some of the worn frets replaced and the whole fret board leveled, as it is just impossible to bend notes with out it fretting out, and this was AFTER a set-up!!!! .....i was told that the reason why these guitars fret out like that particularly below the 12th fret is that most guitar companies don't level and crown there necks before installation....the frets are hammered in and cleaned up, thats it! - any one know if there is any truth to that? this is not the first time i have heard this...over the years i have owned a few guitars that i have had fret work done to and the guitars just shredded when i got them back....and i would always ask "so why wouldn't the play that well from the factory?", the last luthier told me the same thing, guitars factories, particularly Fender, don't level frets, it cost to much....

Yes, it costs money.

Didn't you play the guitar before purchasing it?

bought it off ebay - usually had pretty good luck until this time. Im looking at $150 minimum to get this neck playing right, there are about 5 frets with heavy wear ,,,,,,but i will say this with or without these bad frets, the factory fret job is disappointing - this thing has a 12" fingerboard radius and jumbo frets, you would thing it would be just a great felling Fender - not at all, the action, even after a master set-up, has to be set very high... it plays like a 7.25 radius - so its going in for a whole fret job....so i don't sound to one sided here, i heard Gibson does the same thing - hammers in the frets, glues the fingerboard to the necks, and thats it. no leveling

my Fenders, even my Mexi-Tele came w/better factory fretjobs than my Gibsons (with the exception of my '88 30th Anniversary LP Plaintop)
one of the main complaints on the Gibby forum (besides broken headstocks) is poorly dressed fret ends, poorly set frets, and the total lack of dressing.
normally, a little "love" with a wood-block and tack hammer during the initial after-purchase string change/set up makes them playable.

the BEST factory fret finishing I own is my Amer.Dlx. Strat (I don't own any CS Fenders YET), but even my Mexi-Tele was better than any of my GFOB geets.

i have to agree with you, i have had two other fret jobs done, one was a 78' les paul custom and the second was a 2001 les paul 59' re-issue....both very expensive guitars, ...the 59' was brand new and i was very disappointed when i got it home, once they both were leveled it played like a dream - you would think for the money ALL these guitar companies charge for instruments these days we would get more for our buck. In my case with this Telecaster Deluxe, i already over paid for it now im looking at over a hundred dollars just to get it play with out the string half an inch of the fretboard..its just annoying...

I would question the quality of the set up if you found the guitar terrible. I have a 72 deluxe reissue and find it a beautiful guitar to play and listen to, with no problems about fretting out, above or below the 12th fret.

With some effort and time i'm sure you can turn it into a great guitar.

good luck

*edit*
I also have no problems with action-it plays very well, fairly low (but not too much) no fret buzz-there was out the factory but this disappeared soon after I bought it, with some new strings.
