It depends on your definition of big :) There isn't probly much a a diff. in models close to each other in years but they do make improvements like better pickups and saddles to help the guitar sound better and stay in tune longer.Like if you look at newer guitars of the same model as compared to like an older tele youll notice slight changes through the years (the bridges look diffrent and ect.) to make the playing experience as good as possible to the player without losing quality I hope that is what you mean if not just let me know :D (I prefer new guitars myself but that is just me because Im a player not so much a collector if that makes sense )

ngw - since it sounds like you are getting into this in a fun way, might I suggest that you check out our friends at Amazon and order a copy of The Fender Telecaster Handbook by Paul Balmer.
Not expensive and a good read. It will get you up to speed in no time.
Congratulations and enjoy :D

ngw,

Very nice Tele. Great choice of woods and finish. Good luck finding more time to play/practice. With it comes easier finger positions, cleaner chord changes, and less fatigue. (I'm an older guy and fatigue does happen)

I really enjoyed you life journal. It reminds me of many of my own experiences.

Careful there young fella. The Tele is an aquired taste but once aquired it can be highly addictive. We don't want to hear about you being court ordered to attend "meetings."

I'm glad to see a newbie going with the Tele. You'll learn to articulate better and have a leg up on your buddies in the long run.

Keep asking, and most importantly, keep practicing!
