Looking for some quick advice here.... GC is selling Squire affinity telecasters for under $100 this weekend. Figuring you get what you pay for, and, admittedly a bit of a snob about my guitars, wondering if it's worth it. My son has a squire bass, and is seems pretty nice, but how good can a sub $100 guitar be?

For less than $100 I'd pick one up in a heartbeat.Just because they are low priced that doesn't necessarily mean that they are low quality-in some cases you get much more than what you pay for and this is one such case.

The affinity line is the one squier line I consistently hear things about poor construction, et cetera.

try reposting in the squire forum-the people there should be able to give you some more advice.

If you can get a butterscotch blonde affinity grab it. The main issue the affinity's have is sharp fret edges. but a few minutes with a file will fix this easily. I think they are a great guitar especially if you plan on doing some modding. 8)

Had one several years.
Good guitar, good feel. Pickups, not the best. Getting one for under a 100 is like stealing it. :)

Thanks for all the advice guys. My son came home today with a flat tire (sidewall, not tread) so it looks like my guitar money will be going to new tires... still torn though. We'll see if I get around to GC this weekend at all... If I do, I'll likely walk out with a tele.

I'll keep you posted.

Just bought a squier classic vibe tele custom and it's a great guitar, so buy one. Don't let the name on the headstock fool you, let your ears and hands lead you.

What bluesky said. The butherscotches are well constructed and easily worth the price for an under $200 guitar. For just a carry around axe it's perfect. You won't be crying in your beer if it gets a scratch or two, and if you're playing some place where maybe the beer gets thrown around you won't have to worry about your good gear getting torn up.

Electronics are so-so. You can make a dramatic difference there but you'll have to throw a little money at it. Original Fender pickups, $100 or so on Amazon, you can get a real Fender three way switch, CTS pots, Switchcraft jack there too.

If you're a snob about what's written on the headstock, you'll not be satisfied. If you're interested in playing, you can do a lot worse and spend a lot more money elsewhere.

$100 for Fender pickups? I spent less than $175 total to build my "Squier Nocaster". I'll put it up against a a real Fender Tele anyday. :D

I picked up a new set of Fender Custom Shop Vintage Tele pickups for 80.00 and a Fender upgrade kit containing CTS pots, Switch, Jack and a few different tone caps for 25.00 on ebay plus I installed a Wilkinson convertable compensated Vintage 3-saddle Brass bridge that I picked up for 20.00 it's still top loaded but I will make a string thru when I finish another Tele project I got going. So less than 150 buck and it's got better parts than any mim and that Butterscotch looks Killer and it rivals a 52 reissue 8)

They can be hit or miss as with any guitar. I own 2 MIM Fenders and 3 Squiers. My squier custom with p90s is a very nice guitar. Its my favorite!

A CV is a far cry from an affinity.
100% better guitar...and three times as expensive.
The CV in BSB has a matching/tinted neck.
The affinity looks like a badly tanned body with a white neck.
