Hi, my name is Eduardo and a couple months ago I bought an 72 Telecaster Thinline serie...

The question is that I want to Know what string gauge can I apply or use in my guitar?

I found this in the old manuals...

REPLACEMENT STRINGS:
Recommended for your telecaster thinline

a) Fender 1500 Set - Regular Standard gauge
b) Fender 150 Set - Regular Light gauge
c) Fender 50 Set - Flat wound Standard gauge
d) Fender 505 Set - Flat wound Light gauge

but... I dont know what does it mean!

.009, .010, .011, .012 ??? :S

I hope someone can help me with this!

Thank you and forgive my spelling.

You can use any gauge strings you like. I have .10s on my Tele after using .09s for a long time. I also know of a few people that have .11s on theirs. It's all up to personal choice and what feels best to you.

String gauge is basically the width of the string. Most players use either 9's or 10's.
It all depends on the kind of music you are going to play.
The Fender 150's are really a good set. They are well balanced and keep a steady
production rate across the whole set.
SRV and several other Blues and Rock players play with 11's. Then they tune down one
half a step. The larger the gauge the greater the output or production of the string.
I myself use 10 13 17 24 32 42
I play mainly country and these gauges give a pretty nice twang with the tele.

Hi Eduardo,I use D'Addario 8-38s on my Tele and one of my buddies who's one of the best chicken pickers in Canada swears on 8-38s for his 5 Teles so he can do some realistic steel guitar like bends.Light gauge doesn't necessarily mean a thin tone as players such as Billy Gibbons,Tony Iommi,Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon all used super light gauge strings yet they all got heavy tone.

Hi Eduardo,
Your Telecaster came with Fender® USA Super 250L's, NPS (.009-.042 Gauges).

While you can technically use any gauge strings, to assure that the set-up or action of your guitar does not change due to the use of heavier strings, I suggest that you stick with .009 (called "O9s") replacement strings, unless you are confident in your ability to adjust your bridge and neck truss rod, which may be required after going to larger strings, to maintain the original action and feel of your guitar. Of course, you could always have a reputable guitar shop set up your guitar for larger strings.

.009 is the thickness of the High "E" string, and all guitar strings are normally referred to by the thickness of the High "E" string, or by their designation such as "Light" strings.

.009 -.042 Gauge strings, with .042 being the gauge of the Low "E" string, are normally considered "light gauge" strings.

You can use any manufacturer's light gauge .009 strings: Fender, Ernie Ball, etc.

I use Elixir "Nanoweb" coated strings as they maintain their proper ring much longer than uncoated strings.
But they are a little more expensive.
The extended durability of Elixr strings is most notable on acoustic guitars.

Hi Eduardo,

to answer your question those sets of strings fender recommended in 1972 when they were owned by the CBS corporation were the following guages

#1500 set-12-52 pure nickel wrapped roundwound construction
I think GHS used to manufacturer the strings for them back then?

#150 set-10-38 same as above construction
(the exact set jimi hendrix, albert collens, rory gallagher played  )

#50 set- 13-54 Flatwound

#505-12-50 Flatwound

now you are prolly going to ask wtf the gauges were so heavy back then with wound 3rd strings and the best I can tell you is that the solid body electric guitar basically evolved from the Archtop Acoustic guitar and those guitars required super heavy strings to vibrate the Top in order to produce volume in small clubs or on the bandstand but they could only go so loud before they needed to come up with a new design hence the solidbody electric guitar design.

pm me if you want exact gauges hope this helps cheers everyone :D

Keep in mind that the nut on newer Fenders aren't grooved for thick strings. .010s is not a problem, and .011s will usually work, unless the wound strings are really thick. But .012s or more will almost certainly require taking a file to the nut too.

Eduardo , changing string gauge need a guitar set up ; truss rod adjustment . Think of that before if you don't whant to see a luthier for a set up .

sorry for the misunderstanding I thought he was referring to a used 72 tele I didn't know he was asking about a reissue in that case use the factory gauge as per the last posts or do a complete setup if you go to the beefy strings.

No need to limit to .009s factory gauge. I have a classic (i.e. reissue) Tele Thinline too, and it works well with .008-.010 strings. Because of the vintage style having sharper frets and smaller radius than new style teles, he may want the thicker strings if he bends a lot, cause even though they're harder to bend, it reduces the risk of string snapping.
