You're welcome. I've actually got that saved off in a word doc that I cut and past into threads these days.

Hopefully Fender will get this info up on their "product dating" page pretty soon; I believe it was last updated in 2005.

To Rob - based on your id, were you at Fender in 1979? If so, did you have anything to do with the assembling any of the Lead series? I still have my old '79 Lead II that I got new; it was my first good guitar.

Hi John,
I'll pass along the Serial info thing. I agree it should be updated.

I arrived at Fender in Oct 1980 and spent pretty much a year on the body line in the woodshop. I then became an inspector on the final guitar line and similar jobs after that.
I had a proto Lead 1 1/2 years ago, but in general, i really liked those guitars! They were pretty cool. So, yeh I inspected my share of Leads and also did set-ups on a fair amount of them as i foggily recall.

Cheers,
rob

Thanks Rob; mine predates your tenure at Fender by about a year since I got it in November '79 (a Saturday after Thanksgiving sale) even though it has an "E0XXXXX" serial number.

bizboz - sometimes Rob Schwarz checks in and posts this info on threads, but probably the most direct way to get this information on the guitar you're looking at is to email the serial number to Fender's Consumer Relations department - I think the email is consumerrelations@fender.com

I have a challenge. I acquired a previously owned Fender Tele with a serial number:
US0001645 Am I interpreting this correctly? It was made in US in 2000? Also, can you provide the specs for this ? American Special, Standard or?

Thx!!

Ric

Hmm - can you post some photos of the guitar?

As far as I can recall Fender did not start using that "US" prefix until 2010. They used the "letter plus first digit" system from about the middle of 1976 through 2009. For example a mid-1976 Fender would have a serial number that reads "S6XXXXX" - "S" for "197X" and the 6 then makes it 1976; "S7XXXXX" for 1977. The letter changes to "E" for the 1980s, "N" for the 1990s, and "Z" for the 2000s. So a 2000 USA Fender would have a "Z0XXXXXX" serial number - in 2000 these were only used on American Standards and American Series (which replaced the "Standard" in July or so); by then the American Deluxes added a "D" in front of the letter that indicated the year (so a 1998 American Deluxe had a "DN9XXXXXX" number and a 2000 would have a "DZ0XXXXXX" number).

New to the forum. Working on getting something up but hope that folks out there and Fender people will be able to shed some light on this number.

To post photos here you will have to put them up in photobucket, flicker or some other photo site.

I would also email the serial number to Fender's consumer relations department - their email address is consumerrelations@fender.com - they are very responsive if you contact them directly but they don't always check in on threads in the forum for serial number lookup requests.
