I'm a Strat player but have really got the Tele bug. I've been thinking about purchasing a new American Standard Tele, but the '90s Tele Plus has piqued my interest (full disclosure - I'm a huge Radiohead/Jonny Greenwood fan so that is factoring into the 'Plus' fascination). The Plus is a bit difficult to come by - I've seen a few on CL/eBay but I'm very reluctant to purchase a used guitar sight unseen. I'd much prefer a local guitar that I can touch and feel before purchase. Is the Plus worth the wait/effort or would an American Standard scratch my Tele itch? FWIW, I play mostly Rock, Blues and (of course!) a lot of Radiohead material (the latter quite poorly, but I have fun :-) )

Those original Tele Plus's are getting kind of rare; there weren't that many of them around and they carry a higher price because of the association with Johnny Greenwood. They were also only made from say 1988 through mid-1995 in that original configuration Greenwood uses with the bridge Dual red-label Lace pickup and the hardtail Strat-type bridge; in mid-1995 they switched the Tele Plus to a "Nashville Tele" configuration (Tele neck pickup, middle Strat pickup, Tele bridge pickup) using gold-label Laces and the original American Standard Tele bridge with the long plate (the second version also had binding on the top and the back bevel, which was carried forward to the American Deluxes).

If you just want to scratch the Tele itch I would go for either an American Standard or maybe even an American Special or Highway 1. Of course, if you want that Radiohead sound then you will really need to turn up an original-style Tele Plus.

Jason Simon of Dead Meadow plays a Telecaster Plus and his tone is the whole reason I play a Tele today! If you are into psychedelic/modern bluesy stuff check them out! Don't know if this will work but you can hear some great Tele Plus tone in this video. His Tele is SCREAMIN' in the second song of the video.
