Hi all, i have a 2009 American standard Telecaster, natural ash finish. I have read at the kelly Industries website, in their gear reviews, that the American standards, have the original 52' style BODY radius, which is sharper. Sharper than what, i am not sure. i'm just trying to quote the review. I'm hoping someone here might be able to enlighten  me better than what i've found so far. Thanks very kindly indeed, for any help!

You mean the radius of the neck?

Fretboard Radius: 9.5" (24.1 cm)
A relatively flat fretboard.

Thanks for responding AngryHatter, but as my post says, i'm asking about the guitars body radius, and not the necks.

I have never heard of the use of the term "radius" used in conjunction with a guitar body. It is likely that the reviewer was describing the neck radius and made an error in the description. Since Telecasters have flat bodies, the concept would have no possible application to the body.

The term "radius" in terms of a guitar neck, is the radius (1/2 diameter) of the circle which would be created if you were to extend both sides of the fretboard crown or curvature, until the ends would theoretically meet in space, creating a circle. The "radius" would be from the center point of the circle to the edge of the circle.

The "radius" measurement of a guitar neck, which reflects the degree of curvature of the crown of a guitar neck fretboard, varies consistent with what would be the variation of the theoretical length of the "radius," associated with the size of the theoretical circle that would be created by extending both edges of the fretboard to create the circle.

The greater the degree of the curvature of the neck, the smaller the theoretical circle would be, and the smaller the associated "radius" of the circle would be as well. As such, the degree of the curvature of the neck fretboard is normally described in terms of the "radius" measurement, absent any other method for accurately describing the degree of curvature of a neck fretboard.

The neck radius of the "American Vintage '52 Telecaster Reissue" is 7.25" (18.41 cm) which is "sharper," or a "tighter" radius, than most other Fender Telecasters, such as the "American Standard Telecaster," which has a neck radius of 9.5" (24.1 cm). Some Fender guitars have had a neck radius as large as 12" Radius (305 mm), such as on the "J5 Triple Tele Deluxe."

The "American Deluxe Telecaster" has a compound radius neck which varies from 9.5"-14" (24.1 cm-35.56 cm), from the top of the neck to the bottom of the neck, making it theoretically easier to play chords at the top of the neck, and easier to play notes at the bottom of the neck..., or so the theory goes...

BTW, if you use the Photobucket "IMG Code," your pictures will show up in the thread.

He's talking about the edge all around the body ("radius"). 1/8" in 50s vs 1/4" radius in 60s. 1/4 giving a sharper angle.

The only radius measurement I've heard of on a guitar body is the edge radius. 1/8" will be closer to squared off. 1/4" a little rounder and smoother.

Yea, that's it. In 50's they had a smoother angle.

The smaller the number the greater the curvature of the fretboard.
7.25 has a curved fretboard, 12" has a flat feeling board.
Compound has "the best of both worlds," attitude.

Haven't tele bodies always been planks with no curve to speak of?

No, there's a curve on Tele body at the edge, called the radius. Ever so slightly, was more pronounced on the early Teles.

Thanks for all the help everyone, i just looked at the Fender website, and the specs for the American standard Telecaster has the statement in the unique features list, as follows: The sharper, '52 style body radius. It is the last unique feature there.

I still don't fathom the levels of interest in a plank with pickups. The minutiae that people research. :?:
