If you were to purchase a mexican standard tele, what upgrades would you make? Thinking about buying one and doing my first DIY project. Cheers

I recently finished a MIM Tele project and love how it turned out. I started with a '69 Thinline RI that had a very nice maple neck.

1. Replaced the stock p'ups with Fralin Blues Special Tele p'ups. I ordered the combo p'ups with 1/2 Alnico III and 1/2 Alnico V magnets.
2. Replaced the bridge with a Callaham compensated bridge.
3. Replaced the electronics with a Torres Blues Special package. This includes a 4 way switch that puts the p'ups in series in the far position and a special stacked tone knob with a mid range boost in addition to the normal tone control.

I now have a guitar that I absolutely love and do not plan any further changes except possibly strap locks. It plays like a dream and was still much cheaper than buying a comparable custom Fender or G&L Blues Boy.

Build ya one! You'd be surprised as to how easy it is to build a basic guitar. Don't even need big power tools. Just arouter and a jigsaw really. Basic carving tools maybe. Just buy the parts online. building one yourself gives you the option of personalizing it to your exact specs. Not to mention silkscreening your OWN last name to the Headstock. Buy the neck online though, you can find some nice ones on ebay. Even vintage Fender necks.

Good luck!

I have had 5 telecasters in my career and they've all sounded just a bit different. They are: 78 USA Telecaster, Mid 90's USA Tele Plus, 52 USA reissue, 68 Thinline reissue (MIM), and 2007 Telecaster standard (MIM). The latest Tele - the standard from Mexico is the BEST I've owned! Arctic white, maple neck..beautiful! And it sounds as good as it looks.
Believe it or not it is just perfect! So - the answer to your question - what should be changed? NOTHING! Unless I got a fluke guitar the MIM standard Tele sounds great just as it is! I really think there's a mindset that these are inferior pieces, which compels people to change pickups without really giving them a chance. Just my opinion. The fact is they are now made so well they can stand alone - easily!

Ditto.

There were two things that I was going to change on my '08. I was going to go to a 3-saddle bridge, and locking tuners. Then I thought to myself:

"Shmuck! It's fantastic as it is. "

Mine stays in tune just fine, and at 51 years of age, I can change a set of strings faster than the best of them--so the heck with locking tuners.

And as far as the 3-saddle bridge, I'm in love with the way it sounds with 6--so why tempt fate? It's like dumping your loving and devoted wife for something better.

But there is ONE thing I'll be changing:

My pickguard, but that doesn't really count.
