i am rebuilding a 72 telecaster deluxe re-issue and saw a real nice foto flame neck that i thought would look great on the guitar, however, it has that horrible poly coat finish that fender does these days - i never understood how foto flame worked, i know its not real flamed wood, but is it burned into the wood deep enough that i can be sanded and refinished? - the poly coat has to go - any advise would be great

Here is the answer to your question:

IMHO, you like the foto flame "hamburglar," I would not sand the neck.

wow, great example to my question!!! - sorry to see it on your guitar...so i guess the flame is burned into the finish and not the actual wood - guess im going to pass on that neck...anyone have a 3 bolt, rosewood fingerboard tele neck for sale?

The “Foto Flame” is an thin piece of photographic film of some very highly figured wood laminated to the guitar, (thus the name Foto) developed by Fender, in connection some photographic corporation. (I have heard both Polaroid and Kodak, but most likely Fuji). The Foto Flame guitars, with the flame on top, usually have a Basswood cap on Alder or, in the case of the Foto Flame being on front and back, the whole body can be made of Basswood. When the “Foto Flame,” film is applied to the Basswood top, it makes the guitar appear as if it had high-end matchbook, figured Maple. The way they shrink wrapped this film around the guitar is amazing and it is hard not to think it is real wood.

great explanation, someone told me many years ago that it was burned into the finish with some type of laser, the heat shrunk laminate makes much more sense - interesting to think that a foto flame body would most likely be poplar, but is sold as a premium price by fender..this forum is great! much brain candy to be had

Fortunately, that is not my guitar.
I found the picture on line at TDPRI and "lifted" the photobucket link.

It was a failure and did not sell well once people understood what it was made from.

That pic MickJagger put up is as good an example as any as to why you shouldn't try sanding the foto flame. It's not burnt into the wood it is a VERY thin veneer, that may or may not be made of wood. And there is definitely an image of the hamburglar on every foto flame guitar I've seen, some employee at Fuji (or wherever the veneers came from) probably thought it'd be funny.
