I glad you want to hang your argument and vilify me on one glib comment.

Your "glib comment" was the primary thesis of your entire initial posting:

phansford wrote:
Sustainability is more than just whether the source for a material is sustainable...

As an architect, I don’t care whether a redwood timber is recently harvested old-growth, recently harvested new growth, or reclaimed material - my responsibility is to use that material in a fashion and with the mindset that this timber will be in my building for the next 500 years. If I am going to have a 300 year old tree harvested so I can obtain a 24 inch deep redwood timber, I better not be putting it in a shanty.

...So for me - sustainability is how the resource is used.

If you wish to rationalize or explain away your "glib comments," that "'sustainability' is how the resource is used," without retraction, which you apparently extend to the entire profession of Architecture, we can agree to disagree.

I'm sure if you look hard enough, you can find some beautifully carved elephant tusks for your next architectural project.
Just make sure that you don't put them in any "shanty."

possibly just a problem with language.

"sustainability" ... I guess @ phansford is taking the word in the other meaning of "maintainable, supportable, bearable, justifiable, workable, defensible , viable".

Basically, he doesn't seem to understand the word "sustain" in relation to guitars.

What we mean in this Fender board is the ability to sustain a tone, i.e. to vibrate with a tone.

No, english is not my mother tongue. But this one is too obvious.

Cheers

David

No pun intendend. It's just the only way to bring any sense into your statement.

Cheers

Maybe we could strike up a conversation on avoiding your dining on swordfish...

Glad you got the joke -
Since I not a big swordfish fan you're safe - I prefer sushi made from whales. :D

Honestly - we're on the same page. Obviously my initial attempt at hyperbole was ineffective. :?

But our conversation brings up a good question - is there a market for guitars where their manufacture meets certain sustainable criteria. (FSC-certified woods, reclaimed woods, recycled metals, and so on).

I know Godin's use of locally-harvested Canadian tone woods interest me. I am looking at their 5th Avenue Kingpin to add to my collection.

If you haven't played a 5th Ave. yet, do yourself a favor and go play one. I played one at Guitar Center, and although I was looking for another electric guitar, I almost bought the Godin. Great guitar, especially for the price. The sound is incredible unplugged.

This vid absolutely sold me. Then playing it just confirmed it. I took my 1966 blackface Champ into the store when I test drove it. The fact that you can play it acoustically as well as amplified has really sold me. I think it gives you two guitars for the price of one - an nice acoustic and a classic jazz box.

I agree. Sounded great plugged in, but the unplugged sound is really what makes me want one. And the neck felt more like an electric guitar neck than acoustic, which I also liked. If you end up getting one, I think you can't go wrong, great guitars.
