Sorry, but I just had to add that no partscaster Esquire is ever likely to end up in any museum -- '53 or otherwise. Once altered, the value quickly drops toward near zero, depending on degree. I mean, is that a Fender MEX bridge on that or an aftermarket?!?! Cool picture, though.

I really didn't think that I would have to specifically identify this historic '53 Esquire "partscaster" owned by Bruce Springsteen.

Springsteen's '53 Esquire, with the added neck pickup, is so identifiable and historic in the providence associated with its ownership and use throughout Springsteen's long career, that it is clearly one of the most personally identifiable and valuable guitars in the world, and it is certainly worthy of Smithsonian status.

Springsteen's Tele, circa 1974, with the neck pup covered, and with the weird looking (tooled leather scene that looks like a) middle pickup.

The market value of Springsteen's '53 Esquire could probably only be challenged by Keith Richard's '53 "Micawber" Telecaster which goes back to the Exile on Main Street era, and Paul McCartney's original '61 Hofner Cavern Bass which goes back to "The Big Bang."

Keith Richard's '53 "Micawber" (5 string, open "G" "partscaster") Telecaster, with what appears to be a custom, completely brass bridge:

Getting back to the topic. You may be dealing with some wax potting when you remove the cover. Be careful as I'm sure many of pickup has been ruined trying to remove the cover unless you know what your doing. Some heat may be required.

Let's not forget Eric Clapton's "Blackie".

I've decided to not remove my neck pickup cover.

Funny you say that Bluesky.

I was going to add Clapton's "Blackie" and David Gilmour's "Black Strat," but I stopped at what I consider the top three.

I feel pretty safe in saying that these five guitars, followed by Hendrix's white Woodstock Strat, Stevie Ray Vaughan's "SRV" Strat and possibly Eddie Van Halen's "Frankenstrat" probably round out the most valuable, identifiable guitars, associated with major guitar players.

I'm sure that there are other guitars of high stature that are identifiable in their own right, by and through their owner, that also deserve consideration, like "original" guitars that would include Tom Petty's Rickenbacker, Neil Young's black Les Paul, Roy Buchanan's '53 Tele, #2324, "Nancy," BB King's Gibson ES-355TD-SV "Lucille," Slash's "Appetite" Les Paul, Angus Young's Gibson SG and Dave Grohl's custom Gibson DG-335.

All of these guitars go beyond mere ownership by a famous guitar player, as they are all identifiable in their own right, as historically significant through their association with the player and his career. But I do think that the three guitars that I mentioned in the above post, would be the top three guitars with the most providence, and the highest valued guitars of any guitars in the world; closely followed by "Blackie" and "the Black Strat," IMHO.

Wikipedia's "Blackie" page notes that:
In 2004, Blackie was sold for $959,500 at a Christie's auction. The final bid was cast by the equipment chain, the Guitar Center, with Clapton's guitar setting the record as the world's most expensive "historical" guitar. This will probably prove to be a very profitable investment by the Guitar Center.

Wikipedia also states that another guitar with multiple autographs sold for considerably more in 2006, but that doesn't really count, because it was the collection of autographs, and not the guitar, nor it's providence, that was valued at auction.

I have my neck pickup; which still has the cover on, adjusted pretty low (about 1/8" or slightly less) so I don't think I'll have a problem with the high E catching. And if it turns out I find it necessary to raise the pickup after removing the cover, I'll just have to put some tape on it, I'm not too worried about it; function over form IMO.

If there was one thing I don't like about this guitar it's the muddy sound the neck pickup through an over-driven amp. The covered middle pup sounds nice, and I assume that's due to it's placement as it's the same pickup as the neck pickup.
Thanks for the advice LeFever.

I'm pretty sure that's a painted, tooled leather pickguard. It's a painting of a man leaning on a lamp post.

You are absolutely correct, Tim.

The pick guard was leather with a hand stenciled scene that was described as a guy leaning against a lamp post, with someone looking down from a building window in the background.

The rectangular building with windows that is tooled into the leather pickguard is placed where a middle pickup could be located. If you look closely at the large Born To Run picture above, you can figure out the tooled leather pickguard scene from this description.

The guitar was purchased by Springsteen for about $169 in about 1971 from Phil Petillo, Springsteen's luthier, who continued to service Springsteen's guitars until his death last August.

So guys...I went ahead and removed the cover from my neck pickup today when I changed my strings. The results were as Martian described, but even better than I expected. The first thing I noticed was how much louder the pickup is. It is also much more clear.
The sound brightened up quite a bit, and surprisingly it is also a bit of a 'fuller' sound. Very bluesy and smooth. I like it, and I agree that it has a slightly Strat-esque sound to it now. It sounds much better with higher overdrive than it did before. I had to tape the coil as it was exposed, but that was expected.

I decided to leave my neck pickup cover on, but I solved the problem of slightly boomy/muddy bass with the neck pickup alone in a different manner. I added the Greasebucket tone circuit to my guitar. I have it on my Strat and really like it so I decided to add it to my Tele. Even when turned wide open there is a very slight rolloff of the bass and as the tone is turned down (more hi freq cut), the bass doesn't get wooly sounding. I like it.

You can read all about my BSB Squier Affinity Telecaster and the mods I made to it here:

Here's another approach: The BBE Sonic Stomp, which is a "sound conditioner."

Image

These boxes are great for providing additional clarity, presence and definition to your sound without changing your tone in any way.
As I've written elsewhere, my experience with my amp (a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue) is that this box doesn't like long (12') cords, which seem to create high frequency noise or a "whistle." Fortunately, I figured out how to use the Sonic Stomp before I returned it.

I run my effects into the front of the amp and sit this box on top of the amp and run it with patch cords through the effects loop.
Having the Sonic Stomp sitting on the amp is not a problem, as there is never any reason to turn it off.
Run both knobs at or near "midnight" if you get one.

This is a subtle, yet truly remarkable box, and I highly recommend it.
It can do nothing except improve your sound, even if you have the "grease bucket" circuit.
