I just acquired a '62 reissue Tele MIJ but can't find the serial number. When I removed the neck it has a number of stamps TLC-62B/EX a red letter "A" a red "K" in a box and a red "s" in a circle. The neck is also stamped with ATLC-62B. I got it from a very credible source and I understand it was bought new in 1990. There are no year markings. All these stamps appear to be authentic based on my research, but after pretty much stripping down the guitar, still can't locate the serial number. Its an incredible player but has a lot of wear on it. Any ideas?

I thought that the MIJs had the serial number on the back of the neck just above the heel - right below the "Made in Japan" or "Crafted in Japan" text (depending on the year).

Isn't the American Vintage '52 the only current reissue with the serial number on the bridge plate? Even the AV '62 Tele Customs have the "VXXXXX" serial number on the neck plate and all the MIMs have serial numbers on the back of the headstock (like all other MIMs and the non-reissue USAs).

Okay. So I know what happened now. I got the guitar at a relatively low cost and I wanted it for its sound more than anything. It had a lot of pitting on the backplate and the knob plate, but the bridge plate was pretty clean. I contacted a previous owner and found out the plate, originally a 3 saddle, had been replaced about 4 years ago with a six saddle plate. There had been a lot of rust on the old plate. Unfortunately no one knows where the plate is and there goes the serial number. Thanks for all the help guys!!

Hence the old rule - when you swap parts, always save the OLD parts. Some people never learn. And history is forever lost.

Tag 'em and bag 'em.
Always.
