JamGuy,

I love this project! The tele looks very cool...you did a great job cleaning up the body. I am partial to the white pickguard as well. Any chance you could tally the total cost? If you don't want to, it's cool, I am just curious. Love the pics too!

Seems to be the popular consensus... my girlfriend just came home from house-sitting and saw it and said something to the effect of how it was "so me" and mentioned something about it being boring...(referring to the sunburst and tortoise combination). She's a good sport though considering this will be #6 in the electric guitar department! I built a strat a few years back with the same color combo.I had a mint guard on it but swapped it out for the one pictured. I once had a strat with a pearl guard and a bandmate told me it looked like a toilet seat...it's kinda ruined me on those. I'm planning on keeping the aged white guard too so who knows, down the line I may change it if I get tired of the tortoise. Keeping it is also an excellent excuse for #7... gotta put those spare parts to use!

Well...I'm well under the $1000 mark... I haven't been keeping track too closely but I won the body and neck on ebay auctions and have about $350 wrapped up in those alone. The rest of the parts...the bigsby, odds n' ends, toneshaper, pups...maybe another $400? I was able to scour ebay to source out a bunch of Fender parts for pretty cheap (compared to buying them retail at GC or the like)... the bigsby was a pretty good deal too, about $30 less than I saw them at guitar parts resource. I dunno.... it seems like it's gonna be one heck of a guitar for far less than I could go yank a similar one off the shelf for which seems to almost always be the case.

The neck arrived today from MJT...WOW! What a beauty, nice dark rosewood board and it's a nice sung fit in the neck pocket. Got the tuners installed and the headstock decal applied. I also go the humbucker mounted on the pickguard but I needed to drill out two spots in the body to account for the length of the pickup mounting screws. I did a little mock up so I could share how she's coming along. It looks super sharp (IMO) but of course I'm hoping it plays and sounds as good as it looks!

JAMGUY that looks awesome...but I do prefer the white pickguard on Sunburst...but either way, very nice job! Can't wait till its done!

Thanks... I really am surprised at how many folks like the white over the tortoise, different strokes for different folks I guess! Hey, that's the fun of building your own guitar-being able to suit your own tastes.

The bigsby arrived today and now I'm just waiting on the neckplate to arrive so I can first attach the neck, then get the bigsby installed. It seems pretty straight forward but having never done it makes me the slightest bit nervous... it seems within the realm of do-able so I'm going to give it a shot. From there, I'm going to hand it over to local guitar guru, Steve Spalding, to install a nut and do a final set-up. I'm just not up to the task of nut installation and every guitar I've ever had his set up comes home playing like butter. One of these days I'd like to experiment with it but I don't have the tools or the know-how at this point so I'm happy to let him finish the job.

Your Strat and the new Tele will make a nice matched set. Save the white guard for the screaming deep blue thin coat w/ maple neck and seymour duncans of your choice.
Good call getting Mr. Spalding to do the last bits. I never met him, but am fortunate to have a tech that I trust.
Cheers,

Here's the color of Tortoise that I think you might be looking for JamGuy.
I like red tortoise pickguards like this one, which has a lot of bright red and black.
Let me know what you think.
I think it might brighten up your Tele.
The price seems right at $18 shipped.
The seller has a phone number listed.
I would check to make sure that the offered pickguard looks like the one pictured.

I myself like JamGuy's better and as I've stated before I really just like white pickgaurds since they are neutral. That red and black one I dont think would appeal to me on any Tele.Just because Telecasters to me look smooth, classy, and vintage even new ones and that is sharp and flashy so it contrasts. Just my opinion but I would never put that on any Tele ever lol

Fallen, I don't recall asking you for your silly opinion as to what you think a Telecaster should look like.
Just my opinion of course, but after such a silly statement, I would never ask you what to put on any Tele ever. lol

Now go back to practicing your Roy Rodgers songs on your white-on-white Tele.
Twang, Twang, dude!! lol

Keith Richards, on the 40 Licks Tour, Twickenham Stadium, 2003, during "Satisfaction" as seen on the tremendous "Four Flicks" DVD of the Twickenham Stadium show in London, England, playing his very "smooth and classy" pink and chome Telecaster. lol

BTW, the Twickenham show on the "Four Flicks" DVD is the best commercially available Stones concert DVD, and it upscales to blu-ray perfectly. The camera work, video direction and film editing are excellent as is the Stones performance. (5 Stars!!)

Here's a "smooth and classy" back and white Tele, formerly owned by Jeff Beck during the Yardbirds days, that you might like, Fallen.
It is black and white:

Image

Actually, Beck's Telecaster, which he traded away, is deemed so collectable and desirable that the pictured guitar is actually a Fender Custom Shop copy.

If that doesn't grab you, how about Jimmy Page's "smooth and classy" "Dragon Telecaster":

Image

Only a true "sorcerer" of the Telecaster could get away with whipping this "smooth and classy" Dragon Tele with a bow.

Now here we go again making fun of the poor Avril Lavigne Signature Tele - but I don't think Black & White is all bad.

Image

Especially if you mix it in with a few other Tele's!

But back to the pick guard issue in this thread. One of the first things I did when I got my '94 American Standard Tele sunburst was swap the pickguard to a red tortoise, going for the historic Clarence White B-Bender Tele look:

Image

Here's a shot of my AS with tortoise pickguard hanging on the wall in the Music Room, it's the one in the middle. I can handle mint green on a sunburst (there's one in the first picture above, though in the pic it looks, ugh, white), but I don't like white on a sunburst guitar.
