I wasn't really planning on a new project but just won a HWY1 tele body on the bay... seemed like a pretty good deal... it's been a while since I've owned one and I've been missing it as of late. I'm sure I'll have some questions so I'll keep you all posted, cheers.

Just Ordered all my parts (except a pickguard... I still can't decide on a color)...
It's going to have a 66'ish vibe going on.

Body: HWY 1 Tele, 3TSB
Neck: MJT TRO-C. C-shape, tall frets, 10" radius, rosewood board
Tuners: Kluson Double Row
Neck Plate: Fender "F" with serial #... (my Dad's B-Day...66' appropriate date)
Headstock Decal: 65-67 Transition Logo
Bridge: Bigsby B5 with "F" Logo
Neck PUP: Fralin Unbucker
Bridge PUP: Fralin Stock Tele
Electronics: Tele Toneshaper, reversed controls (Vol, tone, 5-way)
Knobs: 60's Barrel
Switch Tip: Top Hat

Should be SWEET!!! I'm looking forward to this little project... I was sold on the toneshaper after hearing/watching the following vids. http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/Fender-Road-Worn-Telecaster-P3194C348.aspx I understand the bigsby, rosewood board, and different bridge pup may effect my tone slightly and it may not sound exactly like the featured road worn tele but the tone shaper will solve all my pot/cap dilemmas and give me the option of experimenting with volume kits, etc... it seems like a very cool little unit! I'll keep y'all posted as parts start rolling in! Any input on a pickguard color? I was thinking aged pearl or vintage red/tortoise...but maybe parchment? Probably not black... I'll have to go to the USACG site and play with the guitar builder and explore my options. Cheers.

JAMGUY...you are going to love those Fralins...one of my tele loving buddys uses them and they have loads of tele punch and grit! The body looks fantastic after the clean up and polish...keep them pics coming, this build has got me glued in!

Nice work on the body, looks brand new. How about a M.O.P. guard to finish the look?

My .02 worth,

Well, I considered that... especially the more cream colored pearl but couldn't find just what I was looking for. This morning I ended up ordering an aged white and Vint. Tortoise looking one (the more reddish than brown) from GFS. They were pretty cheap and I'm going to see which I like better and hold on to the other for a future project or sell it on ebay. I had considered a leather guard but I've already kinda blown my budget for this build so opted for something cheaper.

As far as the body, I won it on ebay (reliable fender)... it was new but just that matte finish. Love it or hate, I'm in the second camp so polished it up. The orange peel doesn't bother me much and the finish is so thin and easily worn that playing it for any length of time will begin the aging process in which case the orange peel will be even less noticeable.

The neck I won from MJT is not particularly aged or heavily tinted so I think they'll probably go well together once the body gets worn a bit.

I was also able to run over to GC and pick up a string tree so now I've got all that I need or it's on order...now I just gotta wait for it to arrive. Oh, the suspense! :)

Well, after spending a few days rock-hounding in the Oregon desert, I came home to find my parts from Acme had arrived...pickups, assorted hardware, and the Toneshaper.
Image
Let me begin by saying that I'm not always the most technically inclined individual but the assembly and set-up of the Toneshaper was pretty easy. I set it up for a .022uf cap and with the optional volume kit... I guess it's essentially what Fender calls the "greasebucket" circuitry. Anyhow...it was all pretty easy and they send directions for hooking up the Fralin pickups I ordered too so when that time comes, I'm feeling pretty good about hooking it up correctly.

So....what would a build project be without a few snafus? The first was dropping my socket/driver set in the grass coming in from the garage. Naturally, the top flew open and I spent the better part of a half hour scouring the grass before I collected all the bits...(then the next half hour sorting them all back out) :x Then it came time to drop the control plate in... I wasn't altogether surprised that it didn't exactly fit. While HWY1 bodies are routed to fit a reversed control plate it needed just a tad more routing to seat the toneshaper in flush. I dremmeled just a tad of it out and now it fits like a charm! :)

Well, my pickguards arrived today from GFS. I was initially not so excited about the tortoise guard as it seemed "not as vintage red" as I was hoping, strange though, it photographed a bit more red. Anyhow... I'm leaning heavily towards keeping the tortoise guard, I think it's going to look pretty sharp! I photographed both the aged white and the tortoise guards for you all to see and included the photos from the GFS site as a reference. My photo of the aged white guard looks very white, however the GFS photo looked pretty aged...to my eye, the actual color falls somewhere in between. Although I'm almost positive I'm going to use the tortoise guard, I'm curious what you all think? I think if I had opted for a maple board I might be more inclined to use the white one but with a rosewood board I think the tortoise guard will look pretty cool.

Also, the guards are both great quality, the holes on both line up perfectly, and neither would require any fine sanding to fit around the control plate, the pickup, or around the neck pocket... pretty amazing considering they were around $20 each. I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for a replacement pickguard.

My tuners also arrived today but I'm still waiting on the neck, neckplate, and Bigsby.

The neck arrived today from MJT...WOW! What a beauty, nice dark rosewood board and it's a nice sung fit in the neck pocket. Got the tuners installed and the headstock decal applied. I also go the humbucker mounted on the pickguard but I needed to drill out two spots in the body to account for the length of the pickup mounting screws. I did a little mock up so I could share how she's coming along. It looks super sharp (IMO) but of course I'm hoping it plays and sounds as good as it looks!
