Hello boys,

My friend has a mexican telecaster he's been working with for years, and now its pickup changing time.

He plays primarily blues but he likes a bit of bite, because his style is more modern blues. Nothing active though, he's not into death metal.

Any suggestions?

I think the the '62 Tele pickups sound pretty good.

He's using a Carvin Vintage 16 tube amp, no pedals now but more than likely an overdrive booster at somepoint. He prefers to keep it fairly simple. His main complaints about the stock pickups is the unbearable treble and the fact that the sound isn't full enough.

Here are a couple "boutique" pup makers with reasonable prices and excellent reputations that you might want to check out:

Tell him to check out some Texas Specials. They're a little higher output than most stock single coils, a little 'thicker' sounding and the best part IMO, not quite as harsh in the high end.

I think people are too quick to swap parts without properly exploring what they already have.
When was the last time he moved all the knobs on the amp around?

I can make my tele sounds like a tele or an LP.

As far as philosophical points like keeping it clean, you either makes use of everything available or watch as the world passes you by.
In 1972 my chain had an LPB1 and a wah.
It's changed since then, quite a lot.

As a wee lad I attended Woodstock while I was in summer camp.
Hendrix, Santana, The Dead, Cactus, Mountain et cetera.
Then in 1972 I was turned onto John McLaughlin.
Mahavisnu Orchestra
Weather Report
RTF
Larry Coryell

So as you can see, I am a hopeless blues, jazz, fusion based soul...i.e. lost. :D

I am a big fan of the Lindy Fralin Blues and anything Jason Lollar makes!! Also the Seymour Antiquities are pretty smoking for a nice deep vintage blues sound
