Hi folks. I'm hoping someone here can advise me on what, if anything, to do.

I bought a '52 Tele (reissue) and realized after the fact that the neck had an orange-y kind of tint/color to it especially compared to my buddy's '52 reissue. My guitar seemed quite a bit lighter and we surmised that my neck must be lighter.

I'm not crazy about the color and was thinking about replacing it with a new Fender neck. What should I do, if anything?

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

They are tinted.
So what?
Play the tint off of it!

I don't know about you, but I don't look at my guitar as much as I play it, and from where I am standing I can't see what the audience sees.

Hi Baci,
Without knowing more details about the guitar, I would assume that it has a maple neck. If so, the "orange tint" is part of the reissue. Over time...especially 60 years of time, the wood will age, and darken with time. Part of what you paid for, and what makes that guitar a reissue, is the color of the neck. I would immagine replacing it would give you nothing more than a standard tele with a reissue body. I think that would hurt the value of the guitar greatly. Just my two cents!

To answer the weight question: Most necks are made of the same wood, therefor I highly doubt that the neck is the difference. Especially when you compare the amount of wood used vs. the body. It is far more likely that you two have different guitars! perhaps you have an ash body and his is alder? I would look into that before I would change a neck expecting a difference in weight.

There were a few years in the mid-2000s where the butterscotch tint and the tint on the neck was a bit more "orangy" than other years. I had a 2005; it was somewhat more orange than most that I had seen before or have seen since I owned that one. Of course the color doesn't impact the playability.

I believe I recall these being referred to somewhat jokingly as "pumpkincasters" at that time so I suppose Fender dialed back the orange in the finish tint after that time period.

Ok. That makes sense.

My buddy who also had a resissue '52 from the late 90s which clearly had more natural colored neck. And we both noticed that his guitar was a bit heavier.

So would you change the neck? I think the orange neck looks a little out of place. Kind of sticks out and contrasts with the color of the body.

Baci, If you replace the neck with anything other than a "like Kind" you will probably devalue it. unless you keep the original to put back on for resale. That being said I've seen 52 reissue necks on ebay going for a fairly steep price and sticking a Warmoth or similar neck on it just made it a partscaster. Personally I wouldn't think twice about it. But then again I usually play with me eyes closed and only look at it when it's leanin against the amp
