Anyone know what kind of pickup this is no numbers that I can see. It came with a 74 tele custom and I was told it was original though I highly doubt it. ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Pics of the pickup won't really help too much to identify it. Many single coil Tele pickups look exactly the same, the differences in pickups are typically internal. What makes you think it's not the original pup?

I was concerned because there are no numbers on it and there is no copper base and most of the ones I've seen from that time the wires are yellow and black and mine are white and black. I'm so worried about it not being original that I made an offer to a guy on ebay for a 74 for $350 so I can put it back to at least almost normal. He's asking $495 which I think is outrageous but what else am I to do.

It has the right kind of wires for a Fender-made pickup, but that doesn't mean it started life in your guitar. The light reflecting off of the pores of the Ash in the second picture makes it appear re-finished. If so, it would have almost certainly been un-soldered, which you can usually tell. As for the flat vs staggered magnets on the bridge pickup, check this out:

http://www.eddievegas.com/store/details ... CUSTOM.php

Too bad it doesn't show a shot of the bridge pickup base, but I'm pretty sure it should have one. But you can see that the wires are white where they connect to the bridge volume pot in this '74, so maybe it's the original pickup, and you can add a plate easily.
$495.00 seems like a great price for a whole guitar, unless you mean that is for a pickup alone.

I added some more pics so you guys can tell me whats right and whats wrong with this guitar as far as finish. It was changed to a 4 bolt neck in the 70s. Hey Ashtone the $495 price was for the 74 tele bridge pickup and not a guitar and I offered $350 and he took it so I will be changing that unknown pickup to one that I know is a 74. I appreiciate all of your help. I would start off by saying that great music can be played on just about anything, and for the most part, you have everything you need there to get a nice guitar out of this when you are finished. In your original post you mentioned being concerned with the originality, but as far as value is concerned, that ship has sailed. It would be easy to restore it to an original-style finish, but it looks like there would be some work to do on the neck attachment area. It appears that the holes were drilled a bit off from center on the neck heel, and the neck plate looks like it is at an angle in one shot. It's difficult to assess something like this from photos, so I hope I am seeing what I think I'm seeing. It may be that the plate is in the correct position, and the heel of the body was over-sanded on the treble side, making it hang over a bit. I can't be sure. It looks like the neck is in great shape, although I can't see the fingerboard anywhere. Since you have everything there, maybe consider purchasing a replacement body from a reputable shop like Guitarmill or Warmoth. There are tons of great bodies out there, and it shouldn't be more than $150.00 or so. You can even get them pre-finished from some places. I only present this as an option; you know what is important to you, and what you think is cool or right is just valid ( or more so) than what anyone else thinks. Bruce Springsteen's Tele is a mongrel, Bonnie Raitt's old Strat is not original any more, and there are many other examples. I think your best bet is to approach this as a project and a learning experience. I don't know how old you are or how long you have been playing, but your instrument is as much a reflection of who you are as anything else you use to express yourself.

From the photos it would appear that this guitar is a parts guitar...maybe. The neck should attach to the body with a three bolt system which the neck still has, but was changed to a four bolt. The neck and tuners appears original, as does the neck pickup, but I agree the rear pickup does look to be a newer one, it is much cleaner. The body does not look refined though...so it may just have had a pickup replacement and the neck attachment redone.

If it was sold or advertised as all original, sorry but it is not.

Other than that, my question would be how does it sound? Does it sound good? If so then I say enjoy it. Also one other thing on the rear pickup, are the pole pieces flush or are some higher than others? They should not be all one height. I think the A and D should be higher or staggard.

By the way the pics sure helped.

FWIW

Thanks guys, I looked at the neckplate and did see that it is off by just a little bit. I have the original neckplate for it. I also have the original pickguard a little bit warped. I believe the neck and body belong together. I have the original strap buttons in the case. The only thing I can see that I can see that isn't are the tone pots and the bridge pickup and the volume and tone knobs and no original case but it is a Fender tweed case. I may look into having my local guy look into putting it back to a 3 bolt neck but the problem there is the holes drilled into the body to make it a 4 bolt may partially show. The bridge pickup has flat poles they are not staggered. I've just bought a 74 tele bridge pickup and 74 tele pots to at least put it back to the way it was as I can with the correct era replacements even tho quite expensive. I have a lot of cool guitars but none before 1990 except a couple of cool old Yamaha FG Models and wanted something vintage electric. Since getting this it has been fun investigating all this and it is a cool nice playing guitar and I'll probably keep it for quite some time. I'm 51 yrs old and started playing at 25 and got seriously buying and keeping the ones I bought and have developed quite a collection of nice guitars and it was missing that vintage one so now I have it sort of. Oh and in case your wondering I gave $1600 for it which I even now feel like I paid a fair price for it.
Thanks again. PS- The neck and fretboard look great but it has had a refret at one point.
