I bought a 74 fender telecaster custom and the bridge pickup is a black bottom and I thought most of the tele single coil bridge pickups had a copper bottom. I don't see any numbers on the pickup either. Can anyone tell me if Fender made these with black bottoms. The top of it has a little rust and looks old but don't have a clue.I would upload some pics but don't see an option on here for that.
thanks Mark

I go to Google and look like all the 74 tele pickups are copper bottom.

For picture you have to put your picture on "Photo Bucket" first and on this forum choose "Img " and copy your "url" from Photo Bucket.

Sorry I'm french , i can't explain better.

Be patient for read an answer from "expert" . They are not a lot and they are not on the web days and night.

First ; find how to post pictures; it's a must

Markr1,

According to Andre Duchossoir's book "The Fender Telecaster" the first tele pickups had two black fiber plates for the bobbins, in '65 they changed the bottom plate to a light gray and after 1968 a dark grey bottom plate. They went back to black in the early 80's.

The metal plate under the pickup was Tin until 51 and copper coated tin after that until 1983 when they removed it.

So your 74 should have a dark grey bottom plate with a copper coated plate attached...assuming it is original. Pictures would help make it easier to give you a more definitive answer.

If you get a chance and you like Tele's find the book mentioned above, it is a wealth of knowledge.

Oh and welcome to the forum!

T2
