Hi,

I recently acquired a Telecaster, Antigua finish japanese model via ebay. I love the finish, others devote much of their time to hating this finsh. Ha!

Anyway, the neck finsh was apparently tampered with. I think they tried to make it smoother, but to me it feels not so smooth now. It looks like just the shine was sanded away.

Does anybody have any ideas about what I should do?

Refinsh? How?
More sanding?
Oil?

Any help or info is appreciated!

How big are the scratches left by the previous sanding? You want a smooth finished surface. If it is an import, it probably had a thick finish to begin with. How thick is it now? Assuming it has enough finish to do so, wet sand with 400 to start, followed by 600 then 1000. Do not use water to wet sand, use mineral spirits. Water will get in everywhere it can and swell the wood fibers, lifting the finish. Each stage of sanding should be as minimal as possible to avoid going through the finish. If you use your hands as a sanding pad, try not to use your fingertips, use your palm and the pads of all four fingers. Stay away from sharp edges like the heel flare. After sanding w/1000, buff with a white (finest grit) automotive paste buffing compound, by hand, using a soft cloth. Do not use water to wet sand!

Oil is of no use on a finished surface. If you take all the finish off the playing surface of a maple neck, the bare wood will take on a lovely feel with use (and become slightly grey). No oil needed.

Re-finishing a neck is beyond your expertise if you are asking how to to do it; no offense intended. If you to decide to take it on, you will need something to practice your spraying technique on. And this approach requires that you remove the neck from the guitar, take off the tuners and the nut, and probably try to save the face of the headstock for the decal. Where's the serial number? Back or front of headstock, or back of neck by the heel? You probably want to save that decal, too. All this requires careful masking and sanding. Don't use a chemical stripper, it'll get everywhere you don't want it to be.
If you are only intending to re-finish the playing surface on the back of the neck, you will have to live with the look of the area where the new finish meets the old one. Poly finishes do not melt into the new finish like lacquer will, and the place where the two finishes meet will be visible; the wood will reflect light differently through the two types of finish, and they will age differently. The shoulder at the edge of the fingerboard is another trouble spot. It can become an uncomfortably squared edge if not carefully blended back into the fingerboard when sanding.
