I recently made a very impulsive buy at my local San Francisco GuitarCenter.com and walked in and bought a Mexican made Telecaster. However when I try to lookup online what i've bought, I cannot find this model anywhere...

The serial on it is MX10191032, the reciept says it is a Fender Tele Dxe FSR. I just can't find a model online. The reason I was looking is that the guy in the store only had the white in stock and said he would happily swap it for another colour when they come in. So I wanted to look online and see what other colours might be available. I can't even find this one! It looks like one of these but with a different neck...

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/prod ... sku=511141

Here is a picture, anyone the wiser? It plays great, i'm really happy with it. Would just like to see if it is worth persuing another colour.

Image

Oh and another angle on the neck if it helps...

Image

And no, that isn't me. I'm a bit older. That's my 3 year old :)

That'll tell you what you have. It has been discontinued and is not (from what I can see) in Fender's current lineup, so I'd say that the GC salesguy meant to say that he'd have other Teles in other colors coming in.....not another Deluxe FSR. Yours has unique pickups and is a replica, in a sense. Look at the comments on the page I linked to get a better idea of where it sits in the Fender lineup.

Something is wrong here Rob. The OP says he bought a Tele (posted pics) and you've given him the specs for a Strat. Did Fender do a FSR Tele(72?) and a Strat for GC with similiar specs?

Hmmm... I like it a LOT! That one would work in nicely with the other Teles I own - I haven't got a "white" one, just red mahog, sunburst (2), black (3), butterscotch and one other that I can't remember (it's been in the case for quite a while). :D Wait, now I remember, NATURAL finish! I'd better get that MIJ RI 1971 Thinline out for a while.

Enjoy that Tele!

simonthorpe,

What you have is a Fender (or factory) Special Run (FSR) Telecaster Deluxe, probably specifically ordered by Guitar Center.

Sometimes Guitar Center, and others, will come up with an idea for a "one off" special color for a production guitar, or a variation of a production guitar.

What yours looks like is a Classic Series '72 Telecaster Custom, in a non-standard color - hense the "FSR". Also, the headstock decal is different that what's on the '72 Custom, another FSR feature.

And more than likely, Guitar Center will have some others come in in some different colors.

Guitar Center knows that addicts like me exist, and I will pony up my hard earned dollars to buy (yet another) non-standard Telecaster. It works, 'cuz I have a bunch of very cool Telecasters! 8)

When I see one like yours in the GC in either Oklahoma City or Amarillo - I'll own it too!

Sweet Tele!

RickyD

The headstock is wrong, but it won't affect playability.

I like it; could be a rare mistake. I think they made ones with the classic tele headstock on it. The '70's Teles weren't selling so they put Large Strat headstocks on them.

Wow, so much misinformation in one post.

#1: That is the correct headstock for the OP's particular FSR guitar. See Rob Schwartz's second post - this is the FSR Telecaster Deluxe run done last year. It differed from the "regular" Tele Deluxe in both the special colors and by having the Tele headstock instead of the large Strat headstock. The OPs is the first I've seen in that color, but I have seen the candy apple red and seafoam metallic ones around.

#2: Sorry but you're way off on the '70s Teles. Only the Tele Deluxe used the large Strat headstock and it used that headstock from the day it was introduced in 1972. The other Tele models introduced in 1972 retained the Tele-style headstock - the revised Tele Thinline with 2 humbuckers and the new Tele Custom (the one with the same pickguard, controls, and neck humbucker as the Deluxe but retaining the regular Tele bridge and bridge pickup). However, the "new" Thinline and Custom did use the 3-bolt neck and have the bullet truss rod adjuster. The basic Telecaster retained the original headstock and stayed with the 4-bolt neck/truss rod adjuster on the heel.

I think you're wrong on both accounts:

#1: Mr Schwarz's posts make no mention of the headstock, so I still think the neck is wrong. Does the Deluxe model have the large Headstock? It doesn't say that in the unique features, and even claims a 'reverse control plate' on the butterscotch model, equipped w/ single coils. And on the Deluxe there is an 'aged white switch' tipped control. Then the R. Schwarz's posts make no sense. The only explanation is a new neck as a modification.

#2: I think the Fender Marketing was thinking in 1970 that if we put these Strat Headstocks on these we could sell a million of these, less popular Teles. This is only an opinion so how could I be wrong?

Okay; I'll agree that it was probably a marketing decision to put the large Strat headstock on the Tele Deluxe when it came out. However, that was the only Tele model to get the Strat headstock - unless I misread your post it seems like you were saying all 70s Teles had the large headstock and that just isn't so; it was only the Tele Deluxe and as far as I can tell they always had them from their introduction in '72 until they were dropped circa 1981. And I have played a couple of real ones, include a brand new one in '79.

Also I did say that the normal '72 Tele Deluxe reissue has the Strat headstock. We are both correct on that one. I should have read Rob's product detail more closely as it doesn't mention the headstock shape. However, I did see a couple of these 2010 FSR Tele Deluxes in person at a GC in Cincinnati around Christmas time and this particular special run did in fact have the small Tele headstock. Here's a photo of one in candy apple red (not mine; I found it through a web search) - the headstock it partly cut off but it has the regular headstock and it has a vintage-style headstock decal:

Image

Here's a new seafoam pearl one in a ebay auction from Norman's Rare Guitars in CA:

Image

There are 11 original Tele Deluxes currently on gbase; the oldest is a '73, the newest a 1980 (in Antigua!) and all of them have the Strat headstock.

There are 37 Tele Customs ranging from 1973 through 1979; all of them have the small headstock (with the bullet truss rod adjuster); here is a '79:

Image

Just for the hell of it I snagged these photos of a '78 Tele off gbase as well - note both the small headstock and the 4-bolt neck:
