I'm thinking about trading my 2001 American Strat for a Highway One Telecaster via a craigslist exchange. Haven't finalized anything yet but I think I'll demand an additional 100 to compensate for the obvious difference.

My question is how are the highway one telecasters? I've read some folks find the pickups too hot but I'm not too worried about that. I can always change them.
Do they feel and play like a standard American Tele?
Are the necks your average tele neck size? Part of the reason I want to get rid of the strat is because the neck is too skinny for my tastes.

Before you trade off your Strat for the Highway One Tele you might want to get to your music store and try it out before swapping. I sold my Am. Std. Strat and my Highway One Tele and bought an Am. Deluxe Tele and couldn`t be happier, but I played it first to make sure I liked it. If you get it post a picture of it so we can see it.

I love my Hwy 1 Tele.
But like like JPD say I'd try one first to make sure you do too.

I have a HWY 1 Tele and absolutely love it!! As our esteemed colleagues have pointed out try one out if possible. I love the huge frets and hot pups on mine and the Honey Blonde finish is gorgeous. IMO you can't do bad by getting one!

Personally I had to adjust my play a bit by putting less pressure to avoid sharping notes because of the jumbo frets. Also I switched from the stock 9s to 10s making a slight intonation adjustment necessary, which I'm glad I did.
If you can't handle the jumbo frets though you may even want to try a MIM stanard Tele or even a CV Squier.

I think a good move would be to find strats on eBay that have SOLD and Teles matching what you know about the one you're looking to trade for. This can give you a better idea of the value of each. Without doing the research, I'd want to be on the side of the Tele guy as I think you're short changing your strat.....but then again, I have not personally done the research. Also, be sure you are able to play the actual guitar that you're trading for. I often go into Guitar Center and play a bunch of guitars and can play 10 different ones of the exact same model and like 2 of them, am so so with 5 of them and want to throw the other 3 through the front door.
