Before I shimmed the neck or did any fret work I would check the neck for the proper relief (upward bow). A simple way to check it with out trying to sight down it is. Place a capo at the first fret and then fret the string at a fret near the end of the neck and then check the clearance (string to fret) at the center of the neck. Should have at least .010 on most guitars. If the neck is too straight or has a reverse sway you will likely get a fret buzz some where up the neck. And like someone said, check the pickups to make sure they are not too high. Good luck! :idea:
