Am I right? It seems to me that there are a lot more Stratocasters on the used market than Teles. And, most Teles I find are excellent condition, higher end models, or else trashed Squires. Not much in between. Is this just the area I live in?

My $00,000.02 worth is everyone and their dog wants to be the next guitar hero, so they go out and buy a strat. Mostly because they don't know any better.

Nothing against strats, I'm jonesing for a '57 re-issue but my wallet is too thin.

Someone buying a tele, they're specifically looking for one.

i have a strat but my next guitar will most likely be a tele.

The way i see it fender probably sells more strats because they catch peoples eye and are very nice looking with the curves and horns and because of this there will be more used strats on the market.

Teles are simple, one cutaway two pickups, no cuts in the body (except the deluxe)

also when you think of rock and guitar heros there are usually playing either A strat or a les paul and people want to be just like their heros

Hello, Mat here, I find a lot of Telecaster copies both locally (Craigslist) and on ebay, as well as a fair share of Fenders/Squiers. My current is a copy from an outfit called "Austin" I bought relatively cheap, and while it's no Fender, it's not a bad little guitar, get's all the Telecaster "twang" my old Fender had, as well as my heavily modified Squier Tele, both of which were sadly sold. But there's a healthy market here in the Northeast for them by people mostly looking for big Semi-hollows...I have both.

I'm seeing the same thing. Lots of Strats in the used market, but finding a GOOD Tele takes a bit more searching.

Inexperienced guitarists are going to just go with a strat because they're always noted for being versatile.
They may also be prone to see 3 pickups as "better" than 2 pickups.
There are more famous guitarists with strats and gibsons on their shoulders than teles.
Tele's are also pretty much viewed as a hillbilly guitar (obviously we know they can do everything else because we play them).
The strat headstock is probably the most recognized symbol of Fender out there.
Strats have whammy bars.

These are all contributing factors to why there are more strats on the market than teles.

I think it's a good thing for telecaster players. It makes our sounds more unique, less often heard and therefore more of a treat for the listeners! :D

I agree.

Just look at the amount of topics in the Strat forum vs in the Tele forum here.

The biggest market in the world for guitar sales is teenaged boys. As a first guitar, what looks cool? Unless the boy is a die hard country fan, he's going to be getting a Strat (or some pointy metal guitar). Probably 80% of those go onto Craigslist when they find that is way harder than Guitar Hero.

I'm currently looking to pick up a Tele (my first) but already have 8 guitars, have bought and sold a dozen others and have played for 45 years.

I was going through the eBay listings the other day for Fender guitar necks and the Strat offerings outnumbered the Teles by a large margin, same as for full guitar auctions. And these loose necks are going for ridiculously high prices, many sell for almost as much as a Tele or Strat Standard guitar! It's nuts! Interesting side note: lots and lots of Squier necks for sale on eBay...

The local Guitar Center always stocks way more Strats then Teles, too. And that's not even counting dozens and dozens of Squier models. A recent change in marketing at GC now puts all the cheap Squiers on the reachable wall racks, while the better guitars are now out of reach except with help from an employee - about time.

My first two Fender guitars were Telecasters. Right now I own seven Telecasters and seven Strats, but I play the Teles more.

Since I'm looking for a Tele, I thought I'd stay on the lookout since I don't want a thrashed Squier or want to pay a gazillion dollars for an American Deluxe. I found a couple of highway Ones. One of the guys "relic'd" it badly and I nearly cried that he destroyed a perfectly good sunburst finish (was clearly done with a belt sander....what these guys thinking?) and the other was an upgraded highway one looking for sale or trade. Well, I offered one of my strats as a trade and it's looking promising. If it goes through, I'll post a picture.
