A 2009 American Deluxe Tele should have SCN pickups; they changed to the N3 pickups for the 2010 model.

However, you can't just go by the serial number. Fender did the first run of the 2010-spec American Deluxes in late 2009 so they could fill orders immediately after the guitar was introduced so these very first ones carry a "DZ9XXXXXX" serial number, which is also found on the actual 2009 models.

There are some other visual cues that tell you if it is a 2009-spec or a 2010 spec guitar besides the pickups (the 2010 or later bridge pickup is clearly labeled with "Fender" and "N3" in silver script; the SCNs just have raised letters reading "SCN"); a 2009-spec will have abalone dot markers on both the rosewood and the maple fingerboards (these have kind of a blue-green look to them) while the 2010 has pearl dots on the rosewood board and black pearl dots on the maple board. They both have the S1 switch. A 2010-spec also has a compound radius fingerboard, which you should feel when playing it but you can't really visably see that feature.

Fender has been doing the first runs of models they plan to introduce at a January NAMM show in November/December of the prior year so they have stock in the warehouse to fill the NAMM orders. There used to be a joke that NAMM stood for "Not yet Available, Maybe in May". In the case of the revised American Deluxes Fender didn't introduce them at the January show; they waited until March to officially announce these. You're looking at a 2010 guitar that just happens to have a 2009 serial number.

I had a 2004-spec American Deluxe V-neck Strat (a guitar introduced at the January 2004 NAMM show) with a 2003 serial number and a regular "Fender Corona California" neck plate instead of the "50th Anniversary of the Stratocaster" neck plate; I got it in March 2004 as it was the first one to hit the stores here.

Great posts John C. Thank you.

Can be confusing I know. In 2010 I bought a new Am DeLuxe Ash Strat. It had the abalone dots and the SCN pickups. I love this guitar.
I am currently in the process of buying a very nice 2010 Am DeLuxe Telecaster with the N3 pickups and pearl dots - couldn't find one with the SCNs. I just hope it turns out to be as good as the Strat is.
