Hey Guys! I'm new to the forum, and am waiting for my american deluxe to arrive any day now! In response to the above post, I think your mistake is using the words classical, professors, and Berklee in the same sentence. As a college professor in a well known music department, I can tell you personally that Berklee isn't much more than a school of rock at this point.

I attended from 1973-75.
You had to learn pieces on your instrument. I owned an es345, so I played Bach on an es345.
When I got my degree in music, not from Berklee, it was in Performance.
:)

I haven't been to Boston in a long, long time.

As far as your AM Dlx...enjoy!
Back then I played a lot of fusion, still do...now I do it on a tele.
Which was my original point. You can play any music on any guitar.
The rookie mistake is listening to people who pigeon-hole particular guitars into certain styles.
If you like the look of a tel, get one. You'll learn how to extract whatever sound you desire from it.
They are incredibly versatile guitars.

Yes, really. I can teach a flute performance class, but that doesn't mean that I should! The classes that are offered are required for continued accredidation. If they don't meet certain standards, they will become nothing more than MI. A much more important thing to look at is the list of instructors teaching these courses. It's also important to look at the title each instructor has. In larger communities it is very common to have a huge listing of famous faculty members. However, most are adjunct professors. They do little or no work at the university, but they still receive benifits. This also helps the University, as they can say "so and so" teaches here. Its very tricky! In any event, here is the faculty listing for guitar instructors:

Hey there,

first time poster, checked through a few pages first, but couldn't find the help im after. Ive played a lot of acoustic over the years, because of its mobility, but im looking to get a solid all round electric, to keep for a long time. I know almost nothing about electric guitars.

Im mostly into teles, because i love how they look. I also like how they are put to use through a variety of music. From metal (jim root, of slipknot - yes im aware of his jim root edition with different pick ups etc) to classic zep, floyd, lots of radiohead etc. Ive had a little play on one, and like the neck and feel too.

So i have some general electric newb questions, and some tele specific. If someone can help, that would be amazing!!

* Is a tele going to be a good thing to look into considering i like some quite heavy and distorted stuff, or is it a bit bluesy for me? Is there any trouble in changing to some heavier strings and tuning it down a bit?

* Is there much of a difference between the american standard, and american special? In Aus where i am, the special is more expensive, but it seems on the american site, the standard is worth more over there? I know the pick ups are different, but what can i expect out of the sound?? The bridge looks different, but im unsure which is better. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the texas special single coil pick up (on the special), and the American Tele® Single-Coil Pickup on the standard, in terms of how they sound?

NOTE - it is likely i wont be able to play too many of them, because im looking to get one wholesale... Its almost impossible me being able to play the one i would actually get.

Note 2 - yes im aware people will say they think tele's are great on a tele forum...

A tele with noiseless pups like the DMZ Area Hot T bridge or Chopper and an Area T in the neck should get you all you need for heavier stuff and still pull off ok clean stuff. I don't play as "heavy" as you, so my stock MIA AmStd fulfills most of my needs. My Parker, Jaguar, and Taylor fill in from there.

To Jazz09, I'm assuming you've received your Tele by now, but am wondering if you had any issues w/the delivery? I currently have a Am. Deluxe Tele in Wine Transparent on order from Guitar Center; the promised ship date is 6/6/11. I'm hoping that all I've heard about production delays at Fender in 2010 are a thing of the past & I'll receive the instrument on time. Any info anyone in this Forum can give regarding current back log at the production plant is most appreciated.

Thanks,
DD

Hey doodiggler, I am receiving it today...hopefully soon! It is a difficult guitar to find. Mine is the 3-color sunburst. If you go to sweetwater.com, they currently have two Cherry Burst and one Tungston in stock. Both with the all maple necks. After ordering it from sweetwater, I checked other sites, and haven't found any other place that has it in stock. Good luck, and I will let you know what I think of it once it arrives!
